The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book

"Unable to translate" error

Stanza for iPhone is simply incapable of downloading custom ebooks. I have a simple text (10 pages), which I wanted to use to test ebook self publishing. To create an ebook I used the export feature in Adobe InDesign CS4, then CS5, then Desktop Stanza. In each of these programs I tried every supported file format (including ePub, eReader, Kindle, XHTML.) Then I tried to move the resulting files (which all opened fine in Stanza Desktop) to my iPhone using the following options: from a Box.net account, from Gmail, from a dedicated URL, and from Stanza Desktop (using Sharing.) No go in any of the possible permutations. I always get an error "unable to translate xxxx file for import". Does anybody have any idea what is going on here?

You might want to first make

You might want to first make sure that your EPUB file is valid. Are you able to open it in Adobe Digital Editions? And does it pass the EPUB validator at http://threepress.org/document/epub-validate ?

Failed validations

You were right, none of the files passed the validation. Neither those created by InDesign, nor those by Stanza Desktop. There must exist a piece of software that actually works. Do you know of any?

Errors on Stanza Desktop generated files:
Blattodea2.epub is NOT valid

1. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/META-INF/encryption.xml(1): unfinished element
2. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(10): date value '' is not valid, YYYY[-MM[-DD]] expected
3. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(15): assertion failed: The "id" attribute does not have a unique value!
4. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(17): assertion failed: The "id" attribute does not have a unique value!
5. Check finished with warnings or errors!

Preflight report

Epubpreflight runs some of the same validation as epubcheck, but additionally checks for problems like very large file sizes that might affect some reading systems.

1. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(15): assertion failed: The "id" attribute does not have a unique value!
2. ERROR: Blattodea2.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(17): assertion failed: The "id" attribute does not have a unique value!
3. Check finished with warnings or errors!

Errors on InDesign generated files:

Blattodea.epub is NOT valid

1. ERROR: Blattodea.epub/META-INF/encryption.xml(1): unfinished element
2. ERROR: Blattodea.epub/OEBPS/content.opf(10): date value '' is not valid, YYYY[-MM[-DD]] expected
3. Check finished with warnings or errors!

Unable to translate error

I am having a similar problem. ebook in pdf format appears to translate properly in Stanza, but all methods of downloading resulting .pdb file to iPhone (gmail, box.net etc) start to download and then "Unable to translate for import" error message is received. I have done the translation several times.
