The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
— Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book
I've got a weird one. I just downloaded Stanza Desktop for Windows. It's pretty neat. Detects chapters very well. The problem I seem to run into is the file only partially opens.
What I mean is, I open a book (multiple formats: rtf, pdf, lit) and the program does its thing. Then I go to chapter search and go to a later chapter, but all I see is blank space. So I go backwards and it appears that the text just stops at a point. I have not yet tried this on the ipod touch, so I don't know if the same issue will occur there.
Any ideas?
Quick update. Pride and
Quick update. Pride and Prejudice (a pdf) from Guttenberg does exactly the same thing. It looks like the book always opens about 1/4 of the way, then stops.
Once again, this is in Windows Vista x86. I have Bonjour installed and sharing turned on.
The problem reproduces with sharing turned off. It also occurs with sharing turned on and anonymous sharing turned on.
More info:
The last line is bizarrely cut in half, so I only see the top half of the letters. regarding the Pride and Prejudice book, here is the last readable sentence:
Mr. Wickham was the happy man towards whom almost every female eye was turned, and Elizabeth was the happy woman by whom he finally seated himself; and the agreeable manner in
Additionally, I've now run the program as an administrator and not. The problem occurs in both methods.
Edit: Yet more info:
Alright, I've now tried the same book using the Gutenberg txt copy. Once again, the text gets cut off at about the 1/4 mark.
Here is the last readable sentence:
“Do let us have a little music,” cried Miss Bingley, tired of a conversation in which she had no share. “Louisa, you will not mind my waking Mr. Hurst?”
(This is pg 39, the end of Chapter 11, according the MS Word. The pdf got cut off at pg 49, according to MS Word)
When I open both the text and
When I open both the text and the pdf version of Pride and Prejudice in Stanza Desktop and in Stanza iPhone, I see the whole thing, from beginning to end.
You mentioned earlier that this happens to you for all of your documents. Is that correct? If so, can you try downloading and opening this document (War and Peace) and let us know what happens?

Sure thing. I've registered
Sure thing. I've registered and logged in. Most of my files are now prc files, having been imported into mobipocket some time ago, but I can double check on some books from Project Gutenberg.

We have heard this a few times lately, but we have not been able to reproduce this behavior. Would you be willing to share one of your documents with us? If you register on our website, log in, and post, I'll be able to email you to let you know where to send the file. Thanks! ~Emily, Lexcycle Support
I've actually been having the
I've actually been having the same problem myself, but Im using a copy of Windows7. (Im a legit beta tester) Its basically the same as Vista though, so I suspect that whatever is causing problems for others is the same problem for my copy of Windows7. I can only see about 1/4 of the document, no matter what format its in. I've tried pdb files, doc files, pdf files, txt files. All do the same thing, and its not even picky about the particular book either. Its doing the same thing on almost every book I have right now. Everything still works great on WindowsXP Sp3 which I have on 2 other computers, so its not like its a life and death matter to me, but it would be nice to figure out what the problem is. Im sure its something simple that I'm over looking, but for the life of me, I cant figure it out. Any help would be appreciated!
Stanza does usually work just
Stanza does usually work just fine with Vista. The problem you're describing has been reported a few times, but it seems to happen on both Vista and XP (and now on Windows 7). Unfortunately, we have not been able to reproduce it here.
Can you open one of your files in Stanza Desktop, and then do an Export to Plain Text? Open the new text file in Notepad (or the Windows 7 equivalent), and see whether the whole book is there or whether you see the just the first X pages that were displayed in Stanza Desktop. Let us know what you find.
By the way, I should add that although we do hope to support Windows 7 in the future, right now we cannot say that we do.
Sorry I haven't gotten back
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. While the issue continues, I've chosen not to concern myself with it. The primary reason being that, even if the full book doesn't display on the Desktop App, it DOES display beautifully on my Ipod Touch.
Crazy stuff.
Actually, thank you very much
Actually, thank you very much for letting us know that! That answers my question. There are two potential problems, and now I can rule out one of them. Thanks.

With the same issue.
