PDF - specified password is incorrect

Hi - I am trying to open a pdf in Stanza and I didn't type the password correctly. Now, even if I close and re-launch Stanza, every time I try to open the pdf it remembers the password and gives me the error message "specified password is incorrect". How do I get Stanza to forget the password and let me type it again?

Same Problem..

Was this ever resolved?

I entered the wrong password to unlock a book and now every time I try to open the file it gives me an invalid password mesage
without an option of entering a correction. The only way to clear it is to edit the registry.

If you're on Windows, try

If you're on Windows, try uninstalling Stanza Desktop and reinstalling it. To uninstall it completely, go to the Control Panel, then select Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall Stanza from there, then re-download and install it. Let us know if that doesn't work.

If you're on a Mac, you don't need to uninstall. Instead, your preferences need to be deleted manually. Close Stanza, the open the Finder, and then navigate to your Home folder, then to "Library" and then "Preferences". Then delete the files named "stanza.container.swt.plist" and "stanza.plist".

I am using Stanza in Windows

I am using Stanza in Windows and tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it did not work still getting invalid password problem

I had this same problem. I

I had this same problem. I tried uninstalling Stanza (using the control panel) and re-installing it, but it still tells me "The specified password is incorrect." Does this mean I'm never gonna be able to open that file using Stanza now that I've typed the password incorrectly?

While I try to avoid having

While I try to avoid having you edit your registry, can you try uninstalling and reinstalling one more time, but include a reboot between uninstalling and installing? Also, can you see whether Stanza or a Stanza folder still exists somewhere on your computer after you uninstall? Thanks.

Ok, I uninstalled it again

Ok, I uninstalled it again (using the control panel add/remove programs). Then I did a search on my computer for the word 'stanza.' I took a screenshot of the results, but I don't see a way to include that in this reply, so I'll try to just list them.

StanzaSetup.exe found in C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Desktop
Stanza (a folder) found in Recycle Bin
Stanza Issue (my internet explorer bookmark for this page) found in C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Favorites
Stanza (a program folder) found in C:\Documents and Settings\Me\Start Menu\Programs
STANZA.EXE-07198D74.pf found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
STANZA.EXE-14886CA3.pf found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
STANZASETUP.EXE-1537E3D6.pf found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
Stanza.exe (with a little java symbol) found in C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\launch4j-tmp

That's it. I don't know if that helps you fix the problem or not. I haven't tried restarting my computer and reinstalling it yet. I wanted to wait and see what you said about these files. Thanks!

I was asking because

I was asking because occasionally Stanza doesn't get fully uninstalled on Windows, but it looks like it was uninstalled just fine on your computer. You might as well delete StanzaSetup.exe from your Desktop and those three Stanza.*pf items, then reboot and reinstall. It probably won't help, but it's worth a try before we move on to the registry business.

First, try uninstalling,

First, try uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling Stanza. Let us know if that helps. If not, I will give instructions for deleting the preference in your registry. Also, let me know what version of Windows you are running.

Nope, the error dialog still

Nope, the error dialog still pops up. "The specified password is incorrect."

Okay, Matt and laurl. The

Okay, Matt and laurl. The only way to delete the password seems to be to edit the registry yourself.

Warnings

* Editing your registry is fraught with peril. Whenever you edit your registry, you should back it up , just in case you accidentally delete something other than what I describe below.

* Stanza Desktop may still not be able to open or display your document, even when you supply the right password. Depending on what software was used to create the secure pdf and what security settings were chosen, you might see garbled text or it still might tell you that you are entering the wrong password.

1. Uninstall Stanza.
2. Go to Run in the Start Menu, and type regedit.
3. In the folder tree structure on the right, go to this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
JavaSoft
Prefs
stanza
container
swt
user-input

4. Delete the item that shows the password in the value column. If you see the correct password, it means that your file is not openable in Stanza Desktop. If you see the wrong password, then continue.
5. Reboot, then reinstall Stanza. Open your file, and type the correct password at the prompt.

If that still does not help, then you should probably just open your file in Adobe Reader, select all and copy, then paste into Stanza by selecting "New From Clipboard". Alternative, paste into a text file, then open that text file. It's super easy.

Uninstalling and

Uninstalling and re-installing should have deleted the preference information that contained the password, but you might have a configuration that stopped this from happening. I will try to find out where that preference is stored on Windows, and I'll let you know.
