I have a Macbook and ipod touch, both with Stanza installed. I would like to share books I have already on my macbook in various formats with my ipod.... Is the Stanza I got from iTunes a native app? Is it possible to view books with it without using Safari? Safari mobile hangs whenever I use an exported book in iphone format - as they are big files. Breaking them up manually is a pain, and reading in safari seems not to have the features Stanza has as an app.
Is there an instruction book for this program? How do I use the 'Sharing' menu item? (If indeed this is what I need to use?)
Thanks

Font Weirdness
Hi,
Now that I've transferred my .rtf documents successfully, I notice that there are strange font quirks. I think Stanza is substituting one symbol for another. For example, It's possible that a dash, or - is being replaced with É. Who knows why, but these strange É's are appearing where it looks like a pause in dialogue or maybe a quotation mark?
Also, apostrophes are being left out, as in 'don't' appears as dont, or similar.
Hopefully these will be resolved soon?Without too much trouble to the management.
Thanks!
I'm just so tickled that now I can read Stargate fan fiction on my iTouch!!!!!! Hee, heee!

Editing Text
I can't edit text in Stanza when I open a .rtf document with it, (in the desktop app) in order to add the Title and Author. Does it only work with .txt?
title-ing
I have answered my own question. No, it also works with .rtf. See this link for easy, helpful instructions.:

another sharing question
when i am opening a txt document to share, it opens fine in the desktop app, as well as on my iphone. during the iphone download procedure, however, it names the document "unknown.txt". i cannot find a way to change this. is there a way?
I am seeing the same problem,
I am seeing the same problem, the book is renamed to Unknown during transfer.
Edit the file on your Mac,
Edit the file on your Mac, adding these lines to the beginning (this works for sure on txt files)
Title: [Book Title]
Author: [Book Author]
These lines will show up when reading the book, but it will also make Stanza pick that up as the title and author, which is what it shows up as in Shared Books - if you don't tell it a title, it gives it "Unknown"
Thanks for that, it,s working
Thanks for that, it,s working properly now.
I have both open... still the
I have both open... still the touch cannot 'see' my computer. In the Stanza preferences on the touch, there is an item saying 'Shared Books Domain'. What should I have entered there? The two both use the same wireless network I have at home. I have tried disabling the firewall too.
The problem I am having with the desktop app is that it hangs on startup unless I remove the file stanza.container.swt.plist. Once I remove that file from my library/preferences it works. (But still no sharing!!)
Thanks,
Deb
10.4?
abadd0n and kathryn are both using 10.4.11, are you as well? This could be the issue - I was able to transfer books to my iPod, but I'm running 10.5.4. Perhaps there is an issue with 10.4, or specifically 10.4.11, that is interfering with it.
Just as a point of interest, I was able to quit Stanza, with sharing on, and relaunch it. Also, I tried broadcasting a network from my laptop and connecting on my iPod, but it wouldn't show the shared books there, only when I connected both to the same access point.
If you didn't see my suggestion elsewhere, make sure there are no "smart" devices between your computer and your iPod/iPhone. If using a laptop, use wireless, connected to the same access point. If using a desktop, be plugged into the same router, don't have your computer connected to a switch, which is in the "uplink" port on your wireless router. Just a few suggestions.
Also, my Shared Books Domain is simply "local". In System Prefs on your Mac, check Sharing - it should say something at the top like "Computers on your local network can access your computer at: rsande.local"
I'm having the same problems
I'm having the same problems Deb is having.
From Deb: "I have both open... still the touch cannot 'see' my computer. In the Stanza preferences on the touch, there is an item saying 'Shared Books Domain'. What should I have entered there? The two both use the same wireless network I have at home. I have tried disabling the firewall too."
In case it was a problem with the iPhone looking over the cell network instead of the local network I even tried using it over VPN to my local network router. Did not work.
I also tried disabling my firewall (both the inbuilt and Little Snitch), and even turned off multicast filtering on my router. I do not have UPnP enabled. Also I'm on OSX 10.4.11 (all latest updates applied) if that could be an issue. Is there a particular port that needs to be open for sharing?
From Deb: "The problem I am having with the desktop app is that it hangs on startup unless I remove the file stanza.container.swt.plist. Once I remove that file from my library/preferences it works. (But still no sharing!!)"
The workaround I found that if I turn off 'Enable Sharing' before closing Stanza, I can open it again with no problem. Appears to be an issue with how Stanza recognizes and deals with the option(s) for activated sharing on startup.
Same problem here
I have the exact same problem as Deb and abbadOn. I am also using OS X 10.4.11 and have the firewall switched off. I can't get it to work with either my MacBook or iMac. I am using the Remote App to operate iTunes on the iMac from my iPod Touch, so I know I can get a link between the two through the WiFi network.
Sharing does not work on Mac OS 10.4
We recently learned of a problem with sharing on OS 10.4. We expect to have the issue fixed for the next beta, which we hope to be releasing within the next few days. Once it is available, please do try again, and then let us know if you continue to experience problems.
Thanks - I have just gone to
Thanks - I have just gone to give it a try, and now the app Stanza on the Macbook won't start properly. It jumps up and down in the dock for a bit, then sits there with nothing happening.... What could I have done to it? I have tried downloading it again but the same happens. I have tried isolating the preferences file but still have the same problem.....
This is very frustrating!
stanza not opening on mac
I'm having the same problem DebB reported. Stanza opened once on my mac but now it only goes to the dock, bounces around for a while and then reports application not responding.
DEB if you're still reading these, what did you do ?
Thanks!!
sharing
I just figured out how to do it on my own ipod, so I can try to explain it.
You need to have stanza installed on both your MacBook and you iPod touch/iPhone. (And the MacBook one has to be the most recent release.)
In the MacBook, open the book(s) you want with Stanza. Go to the Tools menu, and make sure "enable sharing" is checked. Then in the iPod/iPhone, go into the Stanza app. In the library go to "Shared Books". Your computer should show there, and when you press it, it should have a list of all the ebooks that you currently have open in Stanza. Click on them and they will download to your library.
Oh, and incase anyone else has the same issue, one thing I forgot about was my firewall (silly of me...). I would click on my computer name, and nothing would happen. I couldn't figure it out until I realized I had the application blocked in my Mac's firewall.
I got stanza back but on the
I got stanza back but on the touch it isn't showing my computer name at all. It just has a greyed out "searching for shared books". Do I need to set something in the preferences for stanza on the ipod?
Deb
Is the Mac app open?
Mine gives me a grayed out "searching for shared books" if I don't have the Stanza app on the Mac open.
You mentioned in the last post that you were having trouble with the Stanza app on the Mac. When you open it, it will bounce up & down on the dock, and then appear to do nothing. What you have to do is make sure that you have clicked on the Stanza icon in the dock, and look at your menu on the top of the screen - it should be the Stanza menu.
Go to "File" and "open file" (or just press command-O), and open whatever book you want to put on your iPod. Next, go to "Tools" in the Stanza menu, and make sure that "enable sharing" is checked. Then go back onto your iPod, and try going to shared books again.

Additionally...
Be aware that your iPhone/iPod and your Mac need to be on the same wireless network currently in order to share.
