The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book

1 problem and 1 question regarding chapters

Hi.
First of all I'm using my Intel Mac running OS X.5 with Stanza Desktop 1.0.0 beta-15. I import my pdfs into Stanza Desktop and export them as PlainText. Then I edit them with TextWrangler, save as Unicode UTF-16 and DOS linebreaks.

After reading and searching the forum for hours I got chapters to work, but I still have two issues:

The problem would be, that Stanza desktop recognizes chapters (see image 1&2) but isn't able to jump to them via the go-to menu.
Is this a Stanza Desktop only problem and will this work on my iPhone? (3G running 2.2)

The question would be: Can I hide the author and title lines (I don't need them twice) and the "chapter x:" text somehow?
You can see the code I'm using to get the chapters to work in pic #3.

Thanks for the quick

Thanks for the quick response. I'll try it on my iPhone as soon as possible, at the moment it's still wrapped up. :)
But I'll report back. Calibre refuses to convert any of my ebooks, no matter which format. According to some forums the epub compatibility of Calibre is very basic (in my case nonexistant). I'll stick with Stanza, it's not a big issue after all.

I have had no problems with

I have had no problems with Calibre's support for conversion to Epub, and have found its convesion to be better than Stanza Desktop in most cases. The one thing it will not handle is any DRM protected books, but it is no different to Stanza in that regard. It is certainly much easier to use than Stanza Desktop if you have a large number of books.

I had heard that Calibre

I had heard that Calibre didn't support conversion from pdf (though the website says it does, so I am apparently wrong), but I thought Calibre did well with txt files. That's too bad. Have you tried saving as HTML instead of plain text? Just a thought.

I found an earlier report of the Go To problem, and I observed it myself in Stanza Desktop. In my test case, chapters worked fine when I transferred the book to my iPhone, so I hope they do for you, too. We expect to have your others issues resolved in a future release, and we appreciate your input.

Have fun with your new iPhone!

Thank for pointing that out

Thank for pointing that out about Go To not working for you in Stanza Desktop. We've heard that there is a problem with chapters not working quite right when importing from plain text, but we hadn't heard this exact explanation of the problem. What you're experiencing might be something else. We will look into it.

As for whether the chapters will work in Stanza on the iPhone, there's only one way to find out. Give it a try, and let us know what happens.

As for hiding the author and title info that you don't like, we do know that this happens and we do hope to change at some point in the future. I don't think there's a workaround, but you could try converting from txt to epub using a diferent ebook management program, such as Calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/).

everything works :)

Ok, I got my hands on an iPhone and the Go To function works just fine.
As for hiding the author and title info, it's not really neccesary, because Stanza displays it on a seperate page.

Also the problem with the repeated book title added before every chapter name is not present on the iPhone.

Looks like those are Stanza Desktop-only bugs. At least in my case.
