Hey,
I just fired up Stanza and was greeted with a message about the beta having expired on Dec 6th and pointing me to http://download.lexcycle.com to get an updated version.
Downloading the updated version and installing it just yields the same message as I got trying to run the older version :) Just wondering if there's a new update planned?
Thanks!

Ehh.. i would like to revise my firat answer as follow;
1. I seen both "pick a task ..." & Pick an account to change ( sorry, it was way below the screen, i missed it in the first time)
Make sure you PC's date is
Make sure your PC's date is set correctly. :-P
unable to install new version
I think your problem is the same as mine. Im running Microsoft Vista with LIve One Care and the software protects C: drive programs. You are unable to overwrite any installed programs Unless Vista or Live Care recognises the program (Im not sure which). I have found this to be the case for several different packages. I have gotten around it by having a split partition and installing software that I feel may need regular updating to the second partition and I no longer seem to have any worries. Other than that you will need to uninstall the program before updating to the new version. I think I saw something somewhere in Control Panel to do with User access control, not real sure.
What I did was first remove
What I did was first remove the expired and then installed the newly downloaded the one. It seems worked for for me. I am using Window XP.
Blank screen
I down loaded the new version after the expiration message, and when I try to launch it, I get the toolbar, but a blank screen. still a work in progress?
This is just what you are
This is just what you are supposed to see when you launch Stanza Desktop.
Stanza doesn't currently display any initial opening text; it is a bit like Preview.app or Notepad.exe in that regard. You can open books by selecting the "File"->"Open" menu item.
As Stanza moves along the beta process, we expect to include some initial help text in the screen to guide the user along commonly used tasks. If you have any specific questions on how to use Stanza to load books and transfer them to your iPhone/iPod (which is discussed at http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone), please don't hesitate to let us know.
Even for new version, stilll expired
i just d/l new version that will expire on 3 Feb 09, but still can't lunch the program, always get the message that it was already expired. My date and time was correct, i have checked, please advice on how to lunch stanza desk top for windows.
It sounds like you still have
It sounds like you still have the old version installed. Here are some things to try.
1. Download the new version of Stanza again, then double click the StanzaSetup icon to start the installation. During the installation, make note of where it is installing Stanza, so you know where to find it when you want to launch it later on. Make sure the installation finishes and doesn't stop part way through. At the end of installation, it will ask you if you want to launch Stanza. Say yes, and see if that works.
2. If that doesn't help, reboot, and then try launching Stanza from the folder where the installer installed it in step 1.
3. If that doesn't work, try uninstalling (using the Add and Remove Programs program in the Control Panel) and reinstalling (as described in step 1).
Let us know if that doesn't work.
I have tried as you
I have tried as you instructed, but expired message still show up and i can not launch stanza desktop. I have re-download, uninstall and set up many time still not work. Please help!
We haven't had any other
We haven't had any other reports of this problem. It sounds like you are still trying to instal the old version of the software. It could be that you used the old URL to download the software or it could be that you have multiple files called StanzaSetup.exe on your computer, and you are selecting the old one.
Here's a way to tell which version you are trying to install:
1. Go to where the installer (StanzaSetup.exe) was placed on your computer.
2. Right click on the installer icon, and see what the size of the file is and what date it was created.
Is the size 52.3MB and is the date it was created Dec 6th? If not, then you are trying to install the old version of the software. Here's what to do.
Delete *every* version of StanzaSetup.exe that you have on your computer. Then uninstall Stanza using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Then make sure to download Stanza from this URL:
http://www.lexcycle.com/download-windows
Then install that. Let us know what happens.
Emily
Yes, it was 52.3 MB and
Yes, it was 52.3 MB and created in 6 Dec.
I have deleted all stanza setup files and re download via your given link, but still get expired message and can not launch stanza.
Noted: i have tried set up on my notebook, unfortunately got the same problem.
So when you launch Stanza, it
So when you launch Stanza, it says it expired on December 6th? It's pretty clear that the old version is not being uninstalled and the new version is not being installed. It sounds like your operating system might be preventing you from updating old programs or installing new programs.
Are you running Windows XP or Windows Vista? Also, when you uninstall, is there still a directory on your computer called Stanza with items in it? Let us know.
Thank you very much for stay
Thank you very much for stay with me this long :)
I'm sorry, if i'm confusing you a little bit, english is not my primary language but i still love to read .
Let me summarize my problem again here;
1. I downloaded prior version of stanza desktop for windows and install it before expired date about 3 days(sorry, i can not recall the exact date), but it warn me that this beta will expire in xx/xx/xx and won't allow me to open stanza.
2. I have wait until new beta was updated and download it again, but it still warn me about software expiration.
3. i uninstall it via add/remove software in Control panel and reinstall it many times in both my PC and Notebook but still get expiration issue, and when i said that it was created on 6 DEC, i meant that i have check properties of stanza set up file as you instruct in prior message.
Note: I'm using Windows XP, SP2
Is there something about my time zone? because i'm living in South East Asia with different time or was there any place i should look to clean up old set up file? Please advice.
Thank you again for your effort and warmest support.

We want people to be able to use our software, so we are happy to help.
So when you try to launch what you think is the newest version of Stanza, you still get the expiration message.
1. If the date on the expiration message is still December 6th, then for some reason, the new version is not being installed. This might be because Windows thinks for some reason that you aren't allowed to install or remove new programs.
On your computer, go to the Control Panel, then click User Accounts. Do you see the part that says "Pick an account to change"? Or do you just see a screen that says "Pick a task"? Let us know which you see.
2. If the date on the expiration message is *not* December 6th, let us know. That will indicate that there is another problem.
Thanks!
1. It was "Pick a task..." 2.

I'd like to revise my first answer as follow,
1. I've seen both "Pick a task" & "Pick an account to change"
Sorry, i missed it the first time.
Okay, it looks like you are
Okay, it looks like you are still an administrator on your computer, so that's not the problem. That's good, because you want to be able to install programs on your own computer.
You say that when you launch Stanza is says that Stanza expired on Feb 3, 09. This means that there is probably something confusing with the date on your computer. I know you checked the date already, which is why I didn't mention it sooner. Would you mind checking your date again in this way:
1. From the start menu, go to Run.
2. Type cmd. A little command window will pop-up.
3. Type date.
Can you tell me exactly what it says when you type "date"? Then we'll take it from there. Thanks for staying with us on this!
The Current Date is :

I have one more idea to try
I have one more idea to try with you, which I will post in a little while.
In the meantime, try downloading the *new* version. Maybe that will help:

It's working now!
With latest download, everything work very beautifully.
Thank you very much for your support, you can count me as you customer on stanza full launch.

Can you try again? We just
Can you try again? We just updated the download page with a new release.
Why are you doing this (so hamfistedly)?
What sort of software FORCES people to upgrade on precise dates and cripples the current version? Utter pants! Every other piece of software I use says "new version" available" and lets ME decide when to install it! I'm sitting here watching a new 52mb download, hoping I do not have any of the other problems observed above. And if you ARE going to do this, perhaps some slightly more witty file name than stanzasetup might be helpful - perhaps append the version number or date to the filename so if we have multiple versions downloaded we can more easily differentiate them!
Stanza Desktop is still in
Stanza Desktop is still in beta, and as another user has pointed out, it's quite normal for beta versions of software to work like this. We need our beta users to be working with the latest version of the software. Once we are no longer in beta, then we will no longer automatically expire existing versions.
Incidentally, this person who is having the problem in this post is the only person who has contacted us with this issue. We suspect that it is not related to Stanza but rather has something to do with configuration of their computer. It's not very likely that you will encounter this same problem.
It is quite standard for beta
It is quite standard for beta releases to have an expiry date after which they will not run, although it is a good idea to announce the date in advance when the software installs itself. Also it is good practice in such cases to start displaying an "n days left before software expires" dialog on start-up some days before it actually does expire so people have time to prepare.
As to the download link having the version number as part of the software download I agree that is a good idea.
