iPhone 3G - "Error!" Downloading Personal Content from eReader.com

I upload my .pdb file to my personal content on eReader.com, then I find it fine on my iPhone and click the blue download button, it cycles for a bit then gives me this error message.

"Failed to download and import "bookname.bpd': The ebook file didn not contain ant data. It may be corrupt: /var/mobile/Applications/ACC076FA-5DED-4936-A27B-64159BAF168/Documents/Downloads/download-1"

I tested the file on my computer, it works fine.

Any idea?

sharing books

I am trying to share some books I purchased with my sister. I bought them, downloaded them successfully to my iTouch. I gave her my download information (credit card #, name), but she is not able to download the books. Why not?

unable to download personal content from stanza.fictionwise

I am trying unsucessfully to download my personal content from stanza.fictionwise.com
These are all titles that successfully downloaded with ereader prior to the iphone 3.0 bug with ereader.
The message I get is:
import failed
failed to download and import caitlin kittredge street magic.pdb. The ebook file did not contain any data. It may be corrupt: download-1

I have tried various other books in personal content as well as trying to download from my ereader.com account, all with the same result.
I am using iphone 3g 3.0 with Stanza version 1.8.1

This is very frustrating!

If you were trying to

If you were trying to download a free book from Fictionwise, you need to put download it following these directions, which are included in the "How to Buy Books" section of the Fictionwise Books Store in Stanza:

1. Launch Stanza iPhone.
2. Go to the Fictionwise Book Store in the Online Catalog.
3. Tap "My Bookshelf" at the bottom of the Fictionwise Book Store screen. The first time you you do this, you'll be prompted to enter your the exact email address (username) and password that you used to purchase the book.
4. From My Bookshelf, tap on the book you'd like to download.
5. Tap the blue "Download" button in the upper right corner. Although you were getting a free book, you might need to unlock your book by entering the name and credit card number on the credit card associated with your account.
6. After the book downloads, you can read it immediately by tapping "Read Now". You can also go to the main Stanza Library page, and you'll see your book in Recent Downloads, Authors, Titles, and Subjects.

Same failed to download error message for personal content

I keep encountering the same problem with downloading content on the iPhone.

Scenario is:
- use Stanza (version 1.0.0-beta 16 build #1:396) to save a Word .doc as a .pdb file (did this for two files)
- go to stanza.fictionwise.com and upload the file to my personal content for iPhone library
- go into Stanza on the iPhone, then online catalog, Fictionwise, MyDownloads
- Select the document I want to download and click download
- iPhone starts downloading the content, but then I'm given an error message that states:
"Import Failed
Failed to download and import 'toolboxes.pdb': The ebook file did not contain any data. It may be corrupt: download-0"

I even double checked both files. They open up fine in Stanza Desktop.

Can you please check this out.

When you use Stanza to save

When you use Stanza to save as a pdb file, you are not saving it as an eReader file, which is the only file format that you can use with that method of uploading to Fictionwise. (It's complicated -- the option for exporting to eReader in Stanza Desktop doesn't save in eReader format. It's saving a format that is readable in the eReader program, which is different. The pdb option in Stanza Desktop creates a PalmDoc format file, which is also not the same as eReader format.)

Save your file as an ePub (just doing Save As...) in Stanza Desktop, then upload to bookworm.threepress.org, as described in this FAQ, or just do Sharing using Stanza Desktop:

"An error occurred while downloading your eBook. Please try down

Hi getting the above error when trying to download a book I purchased (John Updike's Rabbit Run). Get the 'no data' error if I use stanza to retrieve on the iphone from the bookshelf.

Have tried mailing support 3 times so resorting to here in desperation.

If it cannot be resolved can I get refunded for teh book ?

3 other books I ordered teh same day work perfectly and all 4 were in same format and ordered using same card and details...

We'll try to help. 1. Can you

We'll try to help.

1. Can you tell me the exact wording of the error you get and how quickly it appeared (e.g., immediately, after 20 minutes)?

2. Can you tell me which version of Stanza you are running? You can find this out by going to the main Library screen and tapping the hammer-and-wrench icon in the upper right corner.

3. Can you try downloading and opening the book using eReader, which is another ebook reader available for free in the App Store?

Let us know, and we'll try to help resolve your problem while you wait to hear from Fictionwise.

personal content

I've just tried to upload a little more of my own content. Not only will it not upload all the other stuff I'd already uploaded has disappeared from my shelf, personal content section. It allows me to choose a file (it's in .pdb), acts as though it's uploading it but then once it's done it there is nothing there in the list underneath and no error messages. It's a little strange all the other stuff that's already on my iPhone is still there. All the other books in my bookshelf are still there, just nothing in my personal content and no apparent way of uploading it. Is there a problem with this section at the moment? I know it's in Beta but if it's not uploading stuff that is in the correct format then shouldn't it at least tell me that it failed to upload? Please help..

We're happy to try help you

We're happy to try help you figure this out, but you might want to talk to support@fictionwise.com, since they manage the servers and might be able provide you with a quicker explanation of the problem.

By the way, does this happen only when you try to upload to stanza.fictionwise.com or to any one of stanza.fictionwise.com, www.fictionwise.com, or eReader.com ?

Personal content

I didn't realise there were other servers I could try it on. It's the eReader.com address I've used to date. I'm not quite sure where I try the other places but I'll try to find them and have a look.

I've just tried again incase it was an overnight thing but there is still no personal content there and when I choose one from my computer to upload it goes through the uploading process for about the same time as it usually did and then..nothing, no personal content

Why don't you try using

Why don't you try using stanza.fictionwise.com or www.fictionwise.com? It's the same interface as you use for eReader.com, and it seems to be working just fine for me.

You can access your personal content at any of the three websites by going to My Bookshelf in Stanza and entering the username and password for the website you want to access. You can also add the websites using the Add Web Page option in the Online Catalog. Just tap the plus-sign in the lower right corner of the Online Catalog screen, and follow the directions.

By the way, is it possible that you exceeded your 25 MB limit for personal content? When you go to upload personal content it tells you how much space you are currently using.

Update: Another person who had this problem had been trying to upload a non-eReader book. Not all pdb files are eReader, so it's possible that you were trying to upload a book with the pdb file extension that was not in eReader format.

Fictionwise is there, but what about eReader?

How do I access my eReader.com personal bookshelf content?

Emily's picture

You should be able to see

You should be able to see your eReader stuff by entering your eReader username and password instead of your Fictionwise username and password in the My Bookshelf in the Fictionwise Book Store. You may have to exit Stanza and launch it again to get it to give you the prompt to enter your username and password.

If that doesn't work, do "Add Web Page" by hitting the plus-sign on the Online Catalog screen, and add the URL for eReader. (I think they have a mobile version of their website.) Then, go to the website you just added by selecting it, log in, and then go to your bookshelf. Download from there.

Where did personal content go???

I just checked in the Online Catalog on Stanza 1.7 and the link to download Personal Content from the eReader/Fictionwise stores is MISSING.

Bring it back please.

Emily's picture

Don't worry -- it's all still

Don't worry -- it's all still there! We just moved "My Bookshelf" from the Online Catalog screen to the Fictionwise Book Store screen. Have a look there, and see if that works for you.

Of course, you can always do "Add Web Page" from the Online Catalog, and create a link to eReader or Fictionwise there instead.

Purchased Books from Fictionwise not downloading to iPhone

I've been using Stanza on the iPhone (and LOVE IT!!!) I purhcased a grouping of 8 books the other day. I was able to go into my Bookshelf - and download all but two of the titles - these titles give me an error stating:

"Import Faild - Failed to download and import 'The Gunslinger [The Dark Tower 1]': Unable to translate 'The Gunslinger [The Dark Tower 1]' for import: Unable to parse NCX data from zip: (null)"

The two titles are "Stephen Kings The Gunslinger - The Dark Tower 1" and "Piers Anthony's A Spell For Chamelion"

I have also attempted to purchase the title "James Rollins - Subterranean" - and when I go to checkout - it tells me:

"One or more of the eBooks you are trying to purchase below (highlighted) requires you to select a specific format. Please go back and choose the format(s) you wish to purchase"

When I hit "Back" there is no option to select the specific format. I am unable to purchase this book.

Any assistance on this would be appreciated.

Update on this issue after the 1.7 Upgrade

I just installed the latest push of the 1.7 Stanza software - I can confirm that the book "The Gunslinger [The Dark Tower 1]" downloaded correctly - however I'm now getting a New error when downloading "Piers Anthony's A Spell For Chameleon" - I get error "Import Failed - Failed to download and import 'A Spell for Chameleon [The Magic of Xanth Series Book 1]': The ebook file did not contain any data. It may be corrupt: download-3. Please note - this title does NOT download successfully in eReader either. In eReader - I get "Download Error - An error occurred while downloading book b1757: "An Unknown error occurred"

Emily's picture

Thank you so much for trying

Thank you so much for trying out your books with the new update!

Since "A Spell for Chameleon" doesn't open in eReader or in Stanza, there is something wrong with the book itself or the book is in the wrong format (i.e., something other than eReader format).

I see that "A Spell for Chamelon" is available in several formats on the Fictionwise website. Is it possible that when you purchased the book, you accidentally selected a format other than "secure eReader" or that Fictionwise accidentally gave you the wrong format? You should definitely get in touch with Fictionwise to try to resolve this.

Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know

Thanks for letting us know about the titles that didn't work for you. They should be fixed in our next version, which we hope Apple will be releasing very soon. In the meantime, you can read them with eReader, another free ebook reader available in the App Store.

As for the James Rollins book -- it sounds like a problem on the Fictionwise sides of things. You should definitely contact them to help you with this problem.

We're glad you're enjoying Stanza!

downloading ebooks

I paid for the Audacity of Hope by Obama and tried to download it but I kept getting an error message "Safari can not download this file." Is this going to be a continuous problem? If so, I'll just get a Kindle.

Emily's picture

Are you trying to download

Are you trying to download your book to your iPhone using Safari? If so, that won't work to get the book into Stanza.

If you bought the book from within Stanza at the Fictionwise Book Store or from www.fictionwise.com, stanza.fictionwise.com, or eReader.com, here's how to get your book into Stanza on your iPhone:

1. Open Stanza on your iPhone.
2. Go to the Online Catalog, then go to the Fictionwise Book Store.
3. Tap on My Bookshelf at the bottom of the Fictionwise Book Store screen.
4. Click on Set Login Info, and enter your account information for the account that you used to buy the book.
5. Your book should now appear in My Bookshelf.
6. Tap on the book you want to download, and then tap the blue Download button in the upper right corner.
=> The first time you do this, you'll be asked enter the credit card number you used to buy the book in order to unlock it!
7. The item you downloaded from My Bookshelf will now appear in the main Stanza Library in your Recent Downloads.

If you bought the book elsewhere, let us know and we will tell you how to get the book onto your iPhone.

Right now, Stanza Desktop

Right now, Stanza Desktop does not support the eReader format used by Fictionwise books, so you won't be able to read your Fictionwise book in Stanza Desktop on your iMac. You can read Fictionwise books in eReader foramt with the eReader desktop client, which is also freely available.

To be more clear, it seems an

To be more clear, it seems an empty file is being created when a download is attempted from an invalid URL to the ereader bookshelf. Because it is an empty file, stanza obviously can not open the file as a valid ebook.

At least this is an answer that is consistent with valid titles working fine in ereader but failing with stanza even though stanza can read ereader files.

There are some known problems with some specific books, and we expect to fix these problems in our next release.

In the meantime, can you try reading your book in your iPhone with eReader (another ebook reader that's freely available on the App Store)? If your book works in eReader but not in Stanza, can you let us know the title of the book so we can try to reproduce and fix the problem? Thanks!

Team of Rivals works in eReader but not Stanza

My father bought Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln from Fictionwise, but got an error message when he tried to download it to Stanza. He downloaded eReader and it works in that application.

Books that work in eReader but not Stanza on iPhone

Only noticed one book from my bookshelf so far that works in eReader but not Stanza.... The Eyre Affair. After downloading I get an error saying that it did not contain any data and may be corrupt.

Thanks,

Mark.

We are aware of the issue

We are aware of the issue with this particular book, and it will be fixed in the next version of Stanza iPhone.

this is not a title specific issue

As I and others have pointed out in other threads, all our titles, be they personal or purchased, are failing to download with the data not there error.

It seems there is an issue connecting the location url stanza sends to get a title with the actual one on ereader. All the 8 titles I have, personal and purchased, work and download fine through the ereader app.

The error message seems pretty clear that the URL for a title is coming up short.

There was indeed a problem

There was indeed a problem with the server downloads that affected certain users. We have resolved that issue; can you try again (by accessing the "My Bookshelf" entry in the "Fictionwise Book Store" catalog) and let us know if you still encounter the problem?

Getting there!

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that all the ereader purchased/free books are now downloading correctly! Hurrah!

I noticed that I no longer have an ereader bookshelf listing in the online catalog...only the fictionwise one yet the books I bought from ereader and which are only in my ereader account still show up and download correctly. How are you tying those two accounts together?? By email address? Could this cause server confusion?

The bad news. The three books that were in my ereader personal content bookshelf and are pdbs which open and download fine in ereader failed with the data not found error.

Thinking I would be better off putting these in the stanza personal content area, I deleted these from my ereader personal content page and added them to the stanza one. It did not help.
