Hi - I've been using Stanza since it first came out for iphone and I love it! I have transferred a number of books from my PC to my iphone using Stanza Desktop but it has suddenly stopped working. When I try to pick up the book on the iphone it finds the PC in the Shared books tab but when I click on that, I get this error:
Catalog Error.
Error reading catalog data. Please try again later.
Any idea how I can correct this?
Thanks for writing such a great app!!!!
Rich.
download from stanza desktop times out
I have recently purchased a new laptop from which I am attempting to transfer ebooks from Stanza Desktop to Stanza (newest versions of both Stanzas) on my iPod Touch. I have tried every solution that I can find in the forums but nothing seems to work. I get as far as downloading the ebook using the Shared Books option but then I get the following message: Catalog error timed out. My new laptop is running Windows Vista, I'm using Zonealarm as my firewall and my iPod has been upgraded to 3.0. This is only a problem with my new laptop. As an experiment, I tried to transfer the ebooks on my old laptop and had no problems whatsoever. BTW, I'm running Windows XP SP3 on the old laptop with the most current Stanza versions and I've never had firewall issues before. As far as I can see, the operating system is really the only difference between the two computers for this issue. Also, it's the same wireless router for both computers.
Please help as I will not have the option of using my old laptop to perform the transfers for very much longer and I am a novice at the more intricate computer programming that some of the solutions seem to require i.e. making sure the firewall allows access to port 9562. I've reinstalled Bonjour, Stanza Desktop, Stanza on my iPod. I've disable the firewall and enabled sharing and anonymous sharing. I've tried changing the format from pdf to epub using calibre. I've even tried sending the ebook as an attachment via gmail. None of these options are helping. What am I missing?

If none of the
If none of the troubleshooting steps help resolve the sharing issue, the best solution might be to try the sharing using Bookworm option described at http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone.
Error reading catalog data
I get this message too: "error reading catalog data. Please try again later".
I've bought a book via Fictionwise and it shows up in My Bookshelf when I browse to the stanza.fictionwise site in safari, but not in My Bookshelf through the Stanza app itself.
This is using Stanza 1.8.1, over both 3G and WiFi.
I've checked my Fictionwise login details are correct - if I enter them incorrectly it just punts me back to the login screen. If I enter them correctly, I get the "error reading catalog" message instead.
I've never tried buying books through Stanza before, so I don't know if this is a new problem or not.
That does happen
That does happen intermittently, and usually corrects itself over time. However, there are other ways to get the books on your iPhone: you can log into your account at http://stanza.fictionwise.com from your desktop's browser, go to your "Bookshelf" and download the books to your computer and then share the books with Stanza iPhone by using one of the methods listed at http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone.
Error Reading Catalog Data - Please Try Again Later
I am having this problem also on my IPhone running ver. 2.2. Each time I attempt to log on through the Fictionwise Book Store I receive the Catalog Error.I am not using desktop sharing but attempting to download directly to my IPhone from my home's wireless network. After numerous attempts to purchase a book, I have still be unable to download anything to my device. The website tells me that my my book purchase is already in my library but if it is, I can't find it.
Have you received an email
Have you received an email receipt confirming your purchase of the book? If so, below is the series of steps to follow to download your book. Follow this series of steps, then let me know precisely at which step you run into trouble, and exactly what error message you see:
1. Launch Stanza iPhone.
2. Go to the Fictionwise Book Store in the Online Catalog.
3. Tap "My Bookshelf" at the bottom of the Fictionwise Book Store screen. The first time you you do this, you'll be prompted to enter
your Stanza by Fictionwise username and password that you used to purchase the book.
4. From My Bookshelf, tap on the book you'd like to download.
5. Tap the blue "Download" button in the upper right corner. The first time you do this, you'll be asked unlock your book by entering the
name and credit card number on the credit card you used to buy the book.
6. After the book downloads, you can read it immediately by tapping "Read Now". You can also go to the main Stanza Library page, and
you'll see your book in Recent Downloads, Authors, Titles, and Subjects.
Thanks!
i get that error also
i dont get it all the time but really frequently when i try to access the online catalog that comes with stanza. i've been using stanza almost since the beginning and this is a new issue for me. sometimes i download a few books from feedbooks or one of the others go back to the main menu and then try to get onto the online catalog and that error will pop up even though i was just on a minute ago. its very annoying cause then i'll wait to the next day and i'll go on but now i am always afraid i wont be able to get back on the same night so i have to download a large number of books at one time instead of a couple going to my list deleting some older books then going back to download more.
We haven't heard about
We haven't heard about catalog outages for Feedbooks recently, so that's a little surprising, but we'll keep an eye out for it and we'll work with Feedbooks.com, who maintains that catalog, to find out what might be causing it.
not specifically just feedbooks
i might have explained wrong. its not just the feedbooks list, its when i am in the main library and then click on the online catalog, instead of seeing the list of different places like random house, feedbooks, munseys, project gutenberg, i will get a blank page with the error reading catalog please try again later, even if i was on just a moment ago and had no problems downloading. it happens almost every time i use stanza app on the ipod touch but the last day or two it hasn't happened but i also haven't really use my ipod as much the last couple days.
Ah, I see. There are
Ah, I see. There are occasionally problems with individual catalogs, since they are hosted in different places by different people, but we have not heard anyone else report a problem accessing the Online Catalog itself.
Have you had other networking or connectivity problems with your iPhone recently? If it starts happening to you again, make a note of where you are when it happens, and more importantly, how you are connected to the internet (3G, Edge, or wifi, and if wifi, your own router or a public router). See if you can find a pattern.
Sounds as though your home
Sounds as though your home WiFi link might not be that reliable?
Error reading catalog data. Please try again later in Stanza 1.7
I am getting the "Error reading catalog data. Please try again" message every time I try toview the online CC catalog. I'm using Stanza 1.7 on my iPhone 3g.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Which catalog do you mean
Which catalog do you mean when you say the "online CC catalog"? I am specifically wondering about the "CC" part. Do you mean the main Online Catalog in Stanza or one of the included sub-catalogs (e.g., Fictionwise, Feedbooks) or some other custom catalog? Let us know. Thanks!
CC Catalog
Hi, Emily.
By CC Catalog, I meant the Creative Commons Catalog, which is in a section by itself (the first is a large collection of catalogs such as Feedbooks, etc., the second is Direct Downloads, and the third is the Creative Commons Catalog).
Thanks!
Ah, so it's a catalog you
Ah, so it's a catalog you added yourself with Add Catalog or Add Web Page, and not one of the catalogs that we automatically include in the Online Catalog. Thanks for letting me know so I don't have to fret about it. :)
Yes. Same problem with Stanza
Yes. Same problem with Stanza 1.7 on iPhone 3g, firmware 2.2 :(
What version of Stanza
What version of Stanza Desktop are you running?
Have you been able to share books before, and now you suddenly can't? Or is this the first time you have tried to share books?
If this is the first time you are trying to share books between Stanza Desktop and Stanza iPhone, please check out the troubleshooting FAQ, below. See item #4 in particular:
http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/troubleshooting_sharing
If you have been able to share books before on the network that is now not working, select Enable Anonymous Sharing from the Tools menu of Stanza Desktop. If that doesn't help, turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone, wait a minute, then turn it back off. Then reboot your computer or disconnect and reconnect it to your wifi router. Try sharing again.
And also I can to connect
And also I can to connect from iPhone to Stanza Desktop via "telnet comp-ip 9562" (in iphone terminal program) and write there "get /" and and see something like: "atom:feed xmlns:atom="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom">Books on ..." and so on...
But Stanza 1.7 on my iPhone 3g 2.2 does not want perform connect to Stanza Desktop :(

A few old questions:
1. Can you let me know whether you have ever been able to share using Stanza Desktop? That is, did it once work and now it doesn't, or has it never worked for you?
2. Did you try the troubleshooting tips, e.g., making sure firewalls are off on your computer and router, selecting "Allow Anonymous Sharing"?
A few new questions:
1. What OS are you running?
2. Have you ever tried sharing iTunes with another computer on your wifi network, and if so, did it work?
Thanks.

Firewalls are off (moreover I can get access to the feed://my-ip:9562/ via safari on my comp and from comps in my net).
"Allow Anonymous Sharing" has no effect.
A few new replies:

Okay, that's very weird. I
Okay, that's very weird. I realize, though, that you said earlier that you had the same problem as someone else in this post, but this post has a pretty diverse set of problems. Can you tell me where exactly in this process it starts to fail for you, and what the exact behavior is?
1. Launch Stanza Desktop and open a book.
2. Make sure there is a check mark next to Enable Sharing and Allow Anonymous Sharing in the Tools menu.
3. Launch Stanza iPhone, navigate to the main Library screen, then tap Shared Books. You should see "Books on My Computer".
4. Tap "Books on My Computer" (or whatever your computer name is).
5. You should now see your book listed on the screen. Tap your book.
6. Then tap Download, then tap Read Now.
I am assuming your problem is either at step 4 (i.e., you never see "Books on My Computer") or at step 5 (i.e., you never see your book), but perhaps I am wrong. Let me know. Thanks!

Thank you very much for
Thank you very much for obeying my commands. Usually when this happens, there is a problem with the router, in spite of all of the user's best efforts to disable all security settings that might be blocking the connection. Do you have another wireless network with a different kind of router that you could try? That would help you confirm this.
Here are some other random things that other people claim to have used to solve this problem:
* connect your computer to your wireless router wirefully using an ethernet cable
* disconnect and reconnect your computer to the wifi router, and turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone and then turn it off
By the way, you can always upload your books to a website and then download them to your iPhone. It seems like a lot of steps, but once it's all set up, it very easy:
1. On your computer: if your book is in any format but eReader or epub, then convert your books to epub using Stanza Desktop. (If your book is in eReader format, try the eReader-specific solutions mentioned above and below.)
2. Go to http://bookworm.threepress.org/, and create an account for yourself.
3. Upload your books to your new account at http://bookworm.threepress.org/.
4. On your iPhone: launch Safari, go to http://bookworm.threepress.org/ in Safari on your iPhone, and sign in.
5. Select the arrow button under Read in Stanza.
6. This will launch Stanza in the Direct Downloads screen. Your book will appear, though it will have a long name with numbers with a URL underneath. Don't worry -- it really is your book.
7. Tap on your book. If Stanza asks you whether you want to download the book, tap Download. The book will open, and it will appear in the categories on the main Library page.
Thank you, I prefer to use
Thank you, I prefer to use for this purpose my own "site" - http server on "My computer".
And to make a "direct download" from it. :)

What version of Stanza iPhone
What version of Stanza iPhone are you using? If you upgrade to the latest version (1.6) by download it from the App Store, do you still experience the problem?
