The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book

Blank window on running Mac desktop

I have just downloaded Stanza to my MacBook Pro and get a completely blank window when I run the application. The menu items are available at the top of the screen. I followed the instructions to enable sharing and then successfully communicated with my iPhone--which reports "no shared books". But I still have the blank white window. Surely this cannot be normal? And how do I go about accessing the Stanza library from the Mac desktop?

Stanza on Mac is nothing but blank

So excited to try out Stanza, but when opened beta version: nothing but a big blank page. Cannot access it all! Is there a fix for this?

That is expected behavior until you get around to opening a book.

blank window

It is a lousy first impression but it appears to be normal.

The instructions are, open however many files you want (File > Open) in Stanza Desktop. Turn on sharing (Tools > Enable Sharing).

Now, with start Stanza on your ipod and tap 'Shared Books'. You should see your computer listed (both puter & pod should be on the same local network obviously). Then just pick the ones you want to download.

Stanza + project gutenberg is a killer app for me.

However I wish stanza-ipod had a categorization or tagging mechanism.

Also, obviously, their desktop app is gonna shut people down on first contact. Hopefully they'll make it less obtuse.

Blank opening page

This makes sense, except that I don't have any books (at least not in a compatible format) on my computer, so that's why I couldn't open any files. I've downloaded a bunch of Gutenberg files on the iPhone and I expected the sync process to bring them over to the computer so I would have a fully synchronised set up. I have turned on file sharing but nothing is brought to the computer from the iPhone.

Your books are backed up to

Your books are backed up to your computer when you sync, since the books are considered application data. Therefore, if you ever need to do a full restore of your iPhone, your books will be restored to your iPhone, as well. Actually accessing individual books on your computer from the backup files, however, might be tricky.

It only syncs from PC the iphone. There isn't any way to move books from the iPhone to the PC.

Stanza Desktop doesn't

Stanza Desktop doesn't display any text when you first launch it; it is a bit like Notepad.exe or TextEdit.app in that regard. You can open books you have on your computer by selecting the "File"->"Open" menu item.

As Stanza Desktop moves along the beta process, we expect to include some initial help text when the application is first launched to guide the user on how to use the application.

This and other common questions are discussed on our Frequently Asked Questions page at http://faq.lexcycle.com.

I have the same problem except...

When I open Stanza desktop, I get a blank screen, with no "File" button to allow me to open any files. I'm on a macbook, OS 10.5, and have followed the directions to download and install, multiple times. What am I missing? The only buttons on the Stanza screen are the mac close, minimize and maximize buttons. I'm new to mac, so I don't know if there's something I'm missing (probably something obvious), but please help.

If you're new to Mac, you

If you're new to Mac, you might not be used to looking for menu options in the bar that goes right across the very top of the screen -- the one that has the solid, black apple on the left and the time on the right. If you're using Safari right now, you'll see that right next to the solid apple is the Safari menu, then File, Edit, etc. Applications written specifically for Mac will usually have all menus in this bar across the top.

After you launch Stanza, you'll see in this bar along the top of the screen the following items: the solid apple, Stanza, File, Edit, View, Go, Tools, Bookmarks, Window, and Help. To open a document in Stanza, go to the File menu, then select Open.

I hope that helps!

It helps a lot...

Thanks!! I'm starting to get the hang of this new computer!

blank page

I am glad to hear I am not alone.

Blank Window
