Edit Book Info

Is there a way to edit a file's metadata from the Mac desktop client? The generated cover page doesn't seem to want to display the correct title information if I edit it on my iPhone. I know I can View -> Book Info (cmd+I), but how do I edit that data?

book information

I thought I would add my solution to this using TextEdit in OSX.

Open the document. click file>show properties. Enter information. I tried this on one eBook that I then opened in Stanza and exported to Kindle. All information shows up.

I still cannot get this to

I still cannot get this to work Have tried all the above information but the author is never saved when exporting files. Specifically to the kindle or txt format.

Best way I have found to do

Best way I have found to do it (with text or RTF files) is to open your book (let's call it "Great_Gatsby.rtf"). Leave the First Line blank, Next line is the title, then the next line is "By Author Name". So it would look like this:

--------------------------Great_Gatsby.rtf--------------------------------------
|
|The Great Gatsby
|By Fitzgerald, F. Scott
|
|Chatper One
|
|BLAH BLAH BLAH
|BLAH BLAH BLAH
|ETC ETC
--------------------------Great_Gatsby.rtf----------------------------------------

Make sure that all the text for the title and author have no space or tabs a the start of the line (ie, bad = " The Great Gatsby" / " By Fitzgerald"; good = "The Great Gatsby" / "By Fitzgerald"

Hope this helps.

Does this work when exported

Does this work when exported to kindle (azw) format or uploaded to the kindle? I'll try it later.

For text files

You can add the lines:
Title: Book Title
Author: Name of Author

and Stanza will figure it out.

For HTML files, you can add:
meta name="DC.Title" content="Name of Book"/
meta name="DC.Creator" content="Name of Author"/
(removed the enclosing "<" ">" marks to show up in this comment)

and Stanza will figure it out.

Just Perfect

This is exactly the info I was looking for. Thanks!

windows client?

What about the windows stanza client? I added the TITLE: and the AUTHOR: in rtf format , but it still shows UNKNOWN as the title in the iphone shared file...

Odd

I just tested this with the Macintosh Stanza client:
Created text file in MS Word.
Experiment 1:
Added to first page:
Title: My Book
Author: Me Myself
Saved as both .DOC and .RTF

.DOC file: Book title and author Unknown
.RTF file: Book title and author opened correctly

Experiment 2:
Added Title and Author to the Word File Properties
Saved as both .DOC and .RTF

.DOC file: Book title and author opened correctly
.RTF file: Book title and author Unknown

So, for .DOC files, add the info thru Properties. For a .RTF file, adding the Title/Author lines on the first page should work.

I will try this tomorrow from work on the Windows version-see what is different.

Book info for PDFs

Use the free PDFInfo for PDF files .. works like a charm !!! www.sybrex.com (i don't work for them, just found this to work like a charm and wanted to spread the wealth)
