Trouble with non-ASCII characters

I used Stanza Desktop to open a PDF and transfer it to my iPhone. On both the desktop and iPhone display, certain characters are missing. These appear to be non-ASCII characters such as quotation marks and fl/ff ligatures.
I tried the trick of copying from Preview and creating from clipboard. Now the problem characters are displayed as question marks.
The three affected characters that I have isolated appear to be “ ff and fl (decimal code points 8220, 64256 and 64258).

2) Try Calibre to convert the PDF to ePub-it seems to handle UT-8 files/ASCII encoding issues better than Stanza Desktop.
