I'm running the latest beta, 1.0.0-beta 17 build 31:403 , on a G4 eMac running OS X 10.4.11 with a GB of SDRAM. What is going to happen when I want to load another book to my wife's iPod Touch?
Multiple File Types with .pdb extension
Files with a .pdb extension can contain several different file types - for ebook files they are normally either Palmdoc format (an older unprotected text format from the PalmOS days that both the desktop and iPhone versions of Stanza can read) or the more modern and flexible eReader format (ereader format files can be protected with eReader's DRM or unprotected, they're essentially an extension of Palmdoc format), which only Stanza for the iPhone can currently read, hence the message when you try to open an eReader file with desktop Stanza. The generic .pdb extension was used by PalmOS as a general catch all for any sort of data file the exact format of which was application dependent. Unfortunately this means that a file having a .pdb extension tells you very little about what type of data it actually contains - it could be PalmDoc text , ereader text (either with or without DRM) or an old PalmOS address book database, spreadsheet, or something else entirely.
As noted previously you get the same message if you try to open other files such as MobiPocket with DRM that Stanza desktop cannot read.
I have a similar problem with
I have a similar problem with some PDB files. When I try to open them with the desktop app, I get the error message:
Stanza Desktop cannot read this eReader book. However, you can share this book with Stanza iPhone/iPod Touch from Stanza Desktop.
But when I transfer the files to my iPhone, the phone app has no trouble opening the files. These are non-commercial (amature published) books, but I don't understand why the phone app can open them but the desktop app can't. I have also tried opening the files in a couple other desktop ebook apps with no problems.
Note that you can read those
Note that you can read those eReader files on your desktop computer with the "eReader" software from http://www.ereader.com/ereader/software/browse.htm.
What kind of book is this?
What kind of book is this? That particular error sometimes crops up when a book with DRM protection (such as Mobipocket) is opened in Stanza. Stanza doesn't yet support DRM for books other than eReader.
