Formatting issues when using MS Reader's .lit files; chapter links don't show up consistently

Hello...

I've looked through the forum quite a bit, but I haven't yet seen anything that addresses this particular issue. My apologies if I'm duplicating a question somehow -- if so, I'd appreciate it if someone could just point me to the other thread :-)

I've got several book files in .doc form that I've used the Microsoft Word add-on that allows me to change the .doc files to the MS Reader's .lit format. Most of the time, that all works perfectly. But there are times that it seems that nothing I do can make the formatting come out properly!

My problem is this: regardless of what I do to the file format, I get inconsistent results in regard to how Stanza then recognizes the chapter links in the "go to chapter..." link in Stanza desktop, and the issues then transfer to the iPhone's Stanza as well. If I load just the .doc files to Stanza (either desktop or iPhone), the chapter links don't show up at all, or do so only if I realllllly work on the formatting of the files to include "heading" formats, etc. Typically, I've also preferred the .lit files because they're considerably smaller in size, thus taking up less memory on the iPhone.

An example: in one file that I've especially had problems with... all of the chapter titles/locations are formatted identically in Word, but once I convert it to the .lit format, the links for chapters 1-5 don't show up, but all the other other chapters show up just fine. At other times/files, I've had, say, 35 out of 40 chapters show up properly, and the others just not show up normally at all. I've typically been able to correct this by being extremely meticulous about the formatting of the chapter titles, etc., but in some of the files, it seems that no matter what I do, at least some of the chapter links won't work.

Can you possibly help me figure out what else I could try? It's really quite frustrating to spend *hours* on formatting and not seem to make any progress :-P I've seen the Calibre software mentioned in the forums... would that help, perhaps? I'm not very good at HTML, though, so that might be a factor in trying other software...?

Overall, though, I have to say how much I LOVE Stanza -- I've spent hours and hours reading with it, and I love the fact that I can *always* have a good book with me, no matter what :-)

Thanks for any help you can provide!

There's generally not much

There's generally not much you can do to customize how Stanza identifies chapters, and there is a little bit of magic that goes on. However, the fact that you mention the number 40 makes me suspect that you might be experiencing a bug in earlier versions of Stanza that prevented chapter detection past the number 40 from working. Are you using the latest version (beta17)? If not, try downloading it from http://download.lexcycle.com and seeing if that fixes the problem.

You might also want to look into trying Calibre (from http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/), which does chapter detection a bit differently. Calibre features the ability to integrate with Stanza's book sharing.
