The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book

Request for Stanza and Iphone 3.0 os Core Functionality Defects Update

Please list in this topic any additional defect as they are found.
The are a number of critical funtionality defects that make Stanza no better then Ereader right now. Stanza was by far the superior application until iPhone 3.0 Os upgrade.

1. The Collection and Subject are two crucial funtionalities that do now work with iPhone 3.0 os.

You may want to check that again!

I'm on OS 3.0 on an iPod Touch and Stanza's working like a charm! No problem with Subjects or Collections, both functioning fine! (Maybe turning off your i-device completely--home and top button-- and then restarting it will clear up whatever problem you're having. Or, that if doesn't work copy the i-device's backup to another place, and reinstall Stanza.)

Even if they weren't, Stanza is still head and shoulders above eReader (there are many features, including customization, user controls, etc. that are much better in Stanza). (Gosh in eReader you have to open a book before you can even change anything about its categorization!)

Now, it will be good if the Lexcycle folks figure out a way of using Apple's cut/copy/paste.. it'd be wonderful to save certain quotes, particularly well-turned phrases or passages, from an ebook. But I'll bet that will come with the next update!

Core Functions

Dude!
I did all that for 3 days. My library was very extensive 809 books and prior to the upgrade all my functions worked and I was happy. Until 3.0 and I had to back it up the backup ran for 10 hours and never finished. I deleted all my music, videos and apps except Stanza and the core apps. Back up still never finished ran for 6 hours. So I had to blow up Stanza and start from scratch again. Loaded 3.0 added back music. and app except Stanza and the backup took 2 - 3 minutes. Added Stanza put 215 books in and the backup took 20minutes. I set up my Collections and Subject and proceeded to add my books. Finished adding went to subject Empty, went to collections empty. So this is the reason for the forum subject that I created.

Editing Subjects

Are you saying that you're able to edit subjects on the Touch Stanza? On mine, subjects appear just fine when I download books from Calibre, but I can't edit the subjects (which is the only way I know on Stanza to indicate that a book has been read). When I try to edit the subject on the Touch, the change doesn't get saved. (This was acknowledged in another posting to be a known bug with OS 3.0, so I'm guessing it's just not something you do, but want to make sure.)

Otherwise, yes, Stanza is beautiful. I've only played with ereader a bit, but so far I like Stanza better. I don't like Stanza desktop, but I love, love, love Calibre so that part doesn't matter to me.

Editing Subjects

If the previous poster is correct. Then he is one of the lucky ones. I created a series of collections and subjects. When I edit my books to include them in there respective collecitons/Subject. It appears to save, but when I look in the colleciton/subject, the book does not appear.

This is a new problem

This is a new problem introduces by the iPhone OS 3.0 upgrade. We're submitting a version soon that fixes it, but until then you won't be able to add or remove subjects from books or custom collections. Sorry for the inconvenience.
