When I open my epub file in Stanza Desktop, at first the title bar at the top of the window contains the Stanza icon along with the title of my eBook and then when the eBook finishes loading, the Stanza icon changes to a .GIF file image that is in my eBook. When I download the eBook from Stanza Desktop to my iPhone, the GIF file image appears next to the title of the eBook in Library view . This problem does not occur when there are no images in the eBook. I am creating the epub files using Calibre version 0.5.9 with HTML files. I am using Vista and XP Professional and Stanza Version 1.0.0-beta16 build #1:396.
No images
The pdf file I'm converting has many images in it, but when I load it into Stanza Desktop I don't see any images at all. The epub that I create and eventually load into my iPod also has no images. Where the text of my pdf file has square bullets, my epub file has the text "square6" instead. Am I doing something wrong in the conversion process?
The problem is that Stanza
The problem is that Stanza Desktop doesn't convert images when loading PDFs; it only extracts the text. See http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/formatting.
I have what I think is a
I have what I think is a similar problem with images. If I create an ePub file with images in Calibre and open it in desktop Stanza, Stanza chooses a different cover from one of the in-line images. (The cover is verified with Adobe DE) If I then transfer this to my iPod, it displays the thumbnail as on the desktop (i. e. the wrong image). When it is opened this image appears full screen until the navigation instructions appear, at which point the correct cover appears. Very strange.
That is a feature of Stanza
That is a feature of Stanza Desktop: we are trying to automatically identify an image that is associated with the cover image for the book. I'm guessing based on your report that the image that it is identifying is not actually the cover of the book, but is some other random image in the book. This can happen when Stanza mis-guesses what the cover image is.
Note, though, that once you transfer the book over the Stanza iPhone, you can edit the book's information (with the "i" button in the books toolbar) and remove or change the book's cover image.
I just wanted everyone to
I just wanted everyone to know that I finally resolved my issue with Stanza arbitrarily using an image from my eBook as the cover image. This occurred when I downloaded the epub file to my iPhone using Stanza Desktop. When I download the epub from my web site, everything appears fine. I would also like to take this opportunity to comment on what a great program Stanza is, it is far superior to any of the other eBook readers I have seen.
Images
I realize that I can edit the book's information with the "i" button in the books toolbar, however I hope to begin selling my eBooks in the near future and having my users edit this information would not be very professional. Other than this one problem, everything else appears to work great; bookmarks come out fine, nice images and clear easy to read text. Can you suggest a work around?
One thing you could do is
One thing you could do is help us properly guess correctly at the cover art. Is your book ePub, or some other format? If it is ePub, we generally try to follow the de-facto standard for identifying a cover in an ePub book (see http://www.mobipocket.com/dev/article.asp?BaseFolder=prcgen&File=cover.h...).
If you are relying on Stanza to guess the cover, you should make the image appear as the earliest one in the file, and have the image be approximately a 2:1 width-to-height ratio.

Forgot to ask about a different image issue. When opening a certain pdf or ePub created from it results in Stanza (both versions) displaying all the images as inverted mirror images. Any suggestions for this? Thanks.

We've occasionally seen the inverted image problem with PDFs, but never with an ePub file. Sadly, we don't yet know of a solution to the inverted image problem (aside from manually changing the cover image once the book is transferred over the Stanza iPhone).
