The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book

What new features do you want to see?

Personally, I now have over 170 books on my iTouch in my Stanza library. I'd love to see a search feature that would let me search for a book instead of trying to browse through my stuff.

Bring words to eyes to increase speed reading

I would love to see Stanza include some speed reading functions. Mainly bringing the words to the eyes, in groups or single, based on a duration. When this is done reading can become more like a movie.

Here's an app that does this for the palm:
http://www.rapidreader.com/about_rr.html
And one for the mac desktop
http://www.acereader.com/

The first app that does this for the iphone, that allows importing my own reading text, and also can do this with books I've purchased will rule the world.
:)

A way to view pdf files

A way to view pdf files

marking as read and show total pages in book

I think there really needs to be a way to mark a book as read (and not just by creating a 'read' category). The way ereader does it is great, beside each book (in main library view) it has a little circle that appears once you start reading a book - as you progress, the circle shades in - a quarter shaded when you are a quarter way through the book, fully shaded when you are done the book.

Also, why no total number of pages in the book and the display of what page you are on? Stanza must know this info already , as the percentage complete can be displayed.

I agree there needs to be

I agree there needs to be better sorting - especially for series.

At least ereader keeps the series name and book number as part of the title - even though it looks a little messy, at least I know which book comes next in the series. With Stanza, the series name and book number gets stripped out after downloading - I have no idea which book starts the series or comes next. This is especially an issue if you download an entire series from the get go, instead of one book at a time.

Sorting

I definitily agree that stanza needs a way of including if a book is part of a series and which number if belongs in the series. I have a lot of different series and I have to go online each time I want to know which comes next.

Buy books directly from stanza

he 3.0 OS allows users to make purchases through applications using their iTunes account. It would be really great to have the possibility to purchase books this way in stanza without needing to have an account in all the supported stores. I think that a lot more people would buy books this way becouse they are used to buying apps.

Kindle support

I want a universal book reader so that I can buy the books I want, in whatever format they happen to be available in, and not have to then have my library then split across multiple reading applications. Right now the Kindle DRM format seems to be getting quite a few books that the other formats don't have so I would love to be able to read those in Stanza. Also, since you're now all part of the same big happy family, it seems to me that Mobipocket format wouldn't be too much of a stretch either. That might also quell the barrage of complaints in the Mobipocket forum regarding lack of iPod support for their reader. It seems to me that Lexcycle could make a huge impact on the ebook market, maybe the biggest impact in the history of ebooks to date, if it could create what is close to a universal reader with support for a the maximum possible range of open and DRM formats. You seem to me to be the only people, with your Amazon connections, that can get close to covering the majority of formats. Maybe I shouldn't say this but I will. This would be so valuable to me that you can forget free or $0.99 app store applications. I would willingly pay $50 for this functionality (providing I got upgrades for a reasonable number of years afterwards) without even a second of thought. - Julian

Features Wanted: Integrated Dictionary

In eReader, if you have purchased a dictionary, while reading a book, you can select a word or words and look up the word's definition in the dictionary. Then when you're done using the dictionary, you can easily return to the book. For those of us who read classics or even books from the last two centuries, we encounter words that are unknown to us usually because it is no longer in common use. This feature is highly useful. And even though I do use Stanza some, I can't see using it exclusively until an integrated word lookup feature is available. Of course, it would be nice if it could just use the same dictionary as "other" apps would use on the iPhone or iPod Touch, as well as a stand-alone dictionary.

I hear you have a working relationship with Fictionwise/eReader.com. Maybe, they'd share their technology for accessing a dictionaries.
Thanks for asking.

Configurable offline dictionaries

First of all, thank you for this wonderful application.
I would like to see an offline dictionary (already requested by
others), with the option to choose from already installed dictionaries
or wordbooks. I read ebooks in different languages, so the possi-
bility to choose would be great.

Off line integrated dictionary

On my Palm TX I used Abstract R&D's A-Lex English Dictionary which had practical features such as saving one's look-up list or add look-ups to favourites. It also had speaking capabilities. On-the-go is a must.

Copy to Save Text

On my Palm TX using eReader app, I could copy a small section of text, restricted to a paragraph for each copy attempt, and paste it to Notes. I could then edit these notes. This feature made it very useful for studying technical none fiction or for making notes and commentary for later perusal. Highlighting sections was useful, too, but the new bent corner feature is close enough.

Cheers,
mhikl

an offline en-en dictionary

like wordnet would be perfect;-)

Rotate desktop

Id love to be able to use my laptop to read these books... If I could push a button to rotate the book so I could flip my laptop up and read in a portrait layout, that would be game changing!

Some video cards have

Some video cards have an option to do this. Look for a portrait/landscape mode somewhere in your OS display settings.

Collection Organization and Bulk Download

It'd be *really* nice to be able to do a bulk download (import a ZIP file, for example?).
Also, anything that lets a large collection be organized (author, series, genre, etc) with a finer
grain of control (searchability as well) would be really nice.

Integrate with Google Books

When I find or hear about a book I like, i search it on google.com/books and then save it my shared library there. I then have a virtually library of books I'd like to read. When I have time to read books, I go through my google.com/books account and choose a book or two I want to get. I then buy the hard copy book.

As those titles are "shared" in my google account, my Stanza account should be able to access those books, and tell me if any are free to get. Or, where I can buy them if the copyright hasn't expired yet.

Also (and this would be really cool) many saved books on google.com/books have extensive preview privileges. Oftentimes, you can read a good dozen or so pages of even newly released books. I think stanza should be able to access this preview content and bring it to my iphone.

Lastly (and I am just using this Stanza for the first time today) but can you browse for books on the stanza desktop app? Or is this only do-able now on the iphone app? I don't think i need to tell you that, no matter how well you do the UI on the iPhone app, a user is more likely to do a lot of browsing on a synced desktop app.

Overall, awesome app though! Look forward to your future developments!

No new features...

I would like to see *all* development of new features frozen until after 2.0 and in the meantime the current features being fixed. Some examples:

Text zooming via pinching is a pain in Stanza. The simple reason is that Stanza is much too sensitive when detecting a pinch gesture. Just touching the screen clumsily with two fingers is enough to make it zoom and more often than not even laying your forefinger carelessly across the screen throws it into a zooming frenzy. Having an option to disable zooming is not a solution, it's just a confirmation that the implementation of this feature sucks. Safari has no way to disable that and nobody cries for disabling it, because in Safari it just works. Pinching should only zoom if the fingers are pulled apart (or moved towards each other) at least half an inch or so.

Book rotation via the motion sensors sucks. Yes, there is a rotation lock feature in Stanza, but this is not a solution, it's just a confirmation that rotating the screen via the sensors sucks. A solution would be to always lock the screen when in book reading mode and have a two-fingered rotate gesture to rotate the screen or even just a portrait/landscape toggle button in the toolbar.

The dimming via sliding up/down on the screen has no visual feedback and if you do it accidently and don't know about that feature the user thinks there's something broken. Having an option to disable this feature again is not a solution. A solution would be to have a transparent overlay with a slider and bright/dark icons on the top/bottom so the user *knows* what's happening if he slides up or down.

The Text Detail feature is stupidly implemented. You have only the choice of either accidently activating it all the time or of disabling it completely. A solution would be to activate it only with a double tap.

Well, I think alll this is moot now, since Lexcycle was aquired by Amazon and they won't keep two slightly different readers alive, especially when one of them gives access to sources other than Amazon. I don't exactly see a future for this app, which really is a pity... But if Stanza will be with us in the future I would really like to see no new features for a while and the existing features fixed instead.

Syncing with GoodReads or BookArmy or similar

I'd like to be able to put in my goodreads account details and when I start reading a book it put it on my 'reading' list and when i finish it put it in my 'read' list

I second this.

I second this.

Shelfari

Now it should be Shelfari, owned by Amazon ;)

Titles

Is there any way I can change the default title on books I import from "Unknown, by Unknown" to the correct information?

support's picture

In Stanza Desktop you should

In Stanza Desktop you should be able to select the "Info" menu and change the title and author from there.

Author listings

Please add a alphabetical a-a on the right hand side of screen for fast searching of author by name. Even a grouping by author's last name would be good. (see kindle for the iPhone sort by author). Ihave 334 books and scrolling down to the author I am looking for take some time.

Thanks for the best an ever!

What new features would you like to see?

Personally, I have over 170 e-books on my iTouch in Stanza. I'd love to see a search feature for my own little library.

Good idea. Related to that,

Good idea. Related to that, I'd like a way of categorizing multiple books in one fell swoop.
