The New York Times: Stanza: “The iPhone or iPod Touch can act as an electronic book reader.”
— Tip of the Week: Turn Your iPhone Into an e-Book
Whenever I open a PDF file in Stanza Desktop, it automatically opens it as a Microsoft Word Document with all the formatting lost. I understand that the file may have originally been created by MS Word and saved as a PDF file, but is Stanza supposed to be able to open the PDF file without converting it back to MS Word format?
Stanza Desktop doesn't open
Stanza Desktop doesn't open things in Microsoft Word format. It opens everything in a special format called ePub, which is the format supported by Stanza iPhone. Most formatting is lost when you open PDFs in Stanza Desktop, because Stanza Desktop extracts only the text (i.e., the actual letters and words) from PDF files.
Using Calibre might preserve more of the formatting you see in your pdf. Here's a link for downloading Calibre:

document format in Mac
Stanza is installed on the desktop Mac, but when I open a pdf file, with Word running, instead of the usual format I get the Stanza format. How can I disable Stanza format on the Mac?
Do you mean that when you
Do you mean that when you double-click on a pdf file, it opens in Stanza instead of Preview or Adobe Reader? If so, you are experiencing an annoying bug in 10.4 that reassociates file types. To fix this:
1. Click once on any pdf file on your computer. The type command-i. (The command key is the one to the left of the space bar.)
2. From the menu that pops up, go to Open With, and select Preview. Then select Change All...
3. At the dialogue that pops up, click OK.
You can do this with any file type that suddenly has started opening in Stanza.
