Stanza 1.8... major problem/bug-- stays on, prevents iPod Touch 2G from sleeping!

I'm going to make a long story short! I read a bit in the middle of last night and, then, as is my habit, put the IPT down on the bedstand. When I woke up this morning, I discovered that Stanza was still on and that my battery was half drained! Stanza 1.8 prevents sleeping!

I just completed some tests.

First, figuring it could a sleep setting issue, I changed that from 2 minutes to 1 minute (this is the auto-lock).

I switched to the home screen and the IPT goes to sleep in 1 minute.

Went back to the book I was reading in Stanza-- 5 minutes later, IPT is still on, book is still showing.

Went back to home screen, it goes to sleep.

Returned to Stanza and put it on the Latest Reads screen (just in case it was a book related issue). No dice. It doesn't sleep!

Aaargghh!

Weird, in my IPT, it can be

Weird, in my IPT, it can be switch to sleeping mode. I don't think I'm using ver 1.8 though. Maybe you should find newer version.

I think even when the phone

I think even when the phone is completely charged and its not unplugged from the adapter its battery immediately starts sinking but that not the case with the i phone ,unlike my nokia 5310 or any other phone.

Hmm...

I'm not sure yet, but there seems to be something fishy with Stanza and sleeping now. Yesterday I charged my iPod touch with Stanza open (but the iPod put to sleep) and instead of charging it even slowly drained the battery! I will keep an eye on that.

It would not be possible for

It would not be possible for a third-party app to control whether an iPhone is charging. That is a mechanical process not a software process.

If you turn on your phone while it is charging it should have a little lightning mark in the battery icon. If it doesn't, it's not actually charging.

I didn't mean to say it

I didn't mean to say it didn't charge at all -- it charged, but it also drained the battery faster (or almost as fast) than the charger could charge it. Obviously Stanza or some other procei havenss was drawing on the battery even when the screen was off (which should send the iPod touch into sleep).

I don't think it's possible

I don't think it's possible to drain the battery while the phone is charging. When the phone (or any device with a rechargeable battery) is plugged into an outlet, it is not running off the battery. It is using electricity from your electrical grid to power the activities of the phone and to charge your battery. This is how rechargeable devices work, the iPhone included.

We didn't change anything

We didn't change anything that would cause this behavior.

Did you happen to accidentally toggle "Dim Screen when Idle" to "Off" in the main Stanza Settings?

Is it possible that your book has some code in it that might be getting executed and hence might keep the phone from sleeping? Can you try your experiment with a book downloaded from Feedbooks, like Pride and Prejudice or Benajamin Button or anything in the top Most Popular books?

Could you have chosen to download some huge file or some large set of files and extended the download time out to some very long time?

Same book I'd been reading before 1.8! Other tip was it!

Thanks for the trouble-shooting ideas.

Your first suggestion rang a big bell! I had turned "Dim Screen when Idle" to OFF on purpose because I didn't want it to dim while I was reading! I also figured it would disable the dimming screen on loading and flicking. If that option means "Do NOT Sleep", the wording should be changed to say that!! And it should require confirmation before being invoked as it is a disaster in the making (battery drain, lost contents, etc.). Because, otherwise, inadvertent taps could indeed produce the problem of no sleep.

Just hunted for a while and couldn't find that command either to switch it back on. Hmm... had to go back to the main library and then to settings. No way to get there from within a book. OK. I just turned that back on.

It's now on-- and guess what? Still no sleep!

Ah, discovered something. I had to exit Stanza first before that command registers! If replicable, then maybe the programmers should be alerted!

We completely agree that the

We completely agree that the name "Dim Screen when Idle" is not an accurate description of what it does. We definitely would like to change the name of that feature for a future version.

We usually try to give the user notice when you need to restart Stanza for the feature to take effect (e.g., the Hide Phone Status feature), but I guess we missed that one. We will also add that in the next version. Thank you very much for pointing this out!

Screen Dim option suggestion

Why not make the screen dim option actually behave as a screen dim option rather than rename it. Seems like the behavior people want to avoid is having the book dim while they are reading a page. Don't know if it is technically possible, but maybe you could just let users select how long to wait until the screen dims with options such as 30 Sec, 60 Sec, 90 Sec, 2 Min, 5 Min. Seldom would someone not be able to read a page on the iPhone or Touch in 5 Min., after that the screen should probably dim and then on the iPhone / Touch regular cycle go to sleep.

Keep up the good customer service!

Thanks for being so responsive! It's wonderful knowing that we're being listened to!

Probably people complained

Probably people complained about it going to sleep while they were reading.
