Le pro­ces de la bande du Danube pas­sa in­aper­cu dans le flam­boiement de la guerre rus­so-​turque. Les brig­ands, y com­pris Titcha aise­ment cueil­li a Roustchouk, furent pen­dus haut et court, sans eveiller dans le pub­lic l'at­ten­tion qu'en de moins trag­iques cir­con­stances on eut ac­corde a leur ex­ecu­tion.

---Toute­fois, les de­bats don­ner­ent aux prin­ci­paux in­ter­ess­es l'ex­pli­ca­tion de ce qui etait reste jusqu'ici in­com­pre­hen­si­ble pour eux. Serge Lad­ko sut par suite de quel quipro­quo il avait ete em­pris­onne dans le cha­land en lieu et place de Karl Dragoch, et com­ment Stri­ga, ayant ap­pris par les jour­naux l'en­voi d'une com­mis­sion roga­toire a Sza­lka, s'etait in­tro­duit dans la mai­son du pecheur Il­ia Br­usch, pour re­pon­dre aux ques­tions du com­mis­saire de po­lice de Gran.

Il sut egale­ment com­ment Natcha, en­levee par la bande du Danube, avait eu a lut­ter con­tre les at­taques de Stri­ga, qui, se croy­ant cer­tain d'avoir abat­tu son en­ne­mi, ne ces­sait de lui af­firmer qu'elle etait veuve. Un soir no­tam­ment, Stri­ga, a l'ap­pui de son dire, avait mon­tre a la je­une femme son pro­pre por­trait, qu'il pre­tendait avoir con­quis de haute lutte sur le le­git­ime pro­pri­etaire. Il en etait re­sulte une scene vi­olente, au cours de laque­lle Stri­ga s'etait em­porte jusqu'a la men­ace. De la, le cri pousse par Natcha, et que le fugi­tif avait en­ten­du dans la nu­it.

Mais c'etait la de l'his­toire an­ci­enne. Serge Lad­ko ne pen­sait plus aux mau­vais jours depuis qu'il avait eu le bon­heur de retrou­ver sa chere Natcha.

Le ter­ri­toire de la Bul­gar­ie lui etant in­ter­dit, l'heureux cou­ple, apres les even­ements qui vi­en­nent d'etre racon­tes, s'etait fixe d'abord dans la ville roumaine de Giurgie­vo. C'est la qu'il se trou­vait, quand, au mois de mai de l'an­nee suiv­ante, le Tzar declara of­fi­cielle­ment la guerre au Sul­tan. Serge Lad­ko, est-​il be­soin de le dire, fut des pre­miers qui s'en­gager­ent dans les rangs de l'armee russe, a laque­lle, grace a sa con­nais­sance du the­atre des op­er­ations, il ren­dit d'im­por­tants ser­vices.

La guerre finie, la Bul­gar­ie en­fin li­bre, il revint avec Natcha dans la mai­son de Roustchouk et reprit son meti­er de pi­lote. Tous deux y vivent en­core au­jourd'hui, heureux et hon­ores.

Karl Dragoch est reste leur ami. Pen­dant longtemps, il n'a ja­mais manque de de­scen­dre le Danube, au moins une fois l'an, pour venir a Roustchouk. Au­jourd'hui, les voies fer­rees, dont le re­seau s'est pro­gres­sive­ment de­vel­oppe, lui per­me­ttent d'abreger le voy­age. Mais c'est tou­jours en suiv­ant les me­an­dres du fleuve que Serge Lad­ko, au hasard de ses pi­lotages, lui rend ses vis­ites a Bu­dapest.

Des trois gar­cons que Natcha lui a donnes et qui sont main­tenant des hommes, le plus je­une, apres un se­vere ap­pren­tis­sage sous les or­dres de Karl Dragoch, est en bonne voie pour at­tein­dre les plus hauts grades dans l'ad­min­is­tra­tion ju­di­ci­aire de Bul­gar­ie.

Le cadet, digne her­iti­er d'un lau­re­at de la Ligue Danu­bi­enne, s'est con­sacre au pe­uple des eaux. Toute­fois, re­je­tant la ligne, il a per­fec­tionne les meth­od­es de com­bat. Il doit a ses pecheries d'es­tur­geon une celebrite uni­verselle et une for­tune qui promet de de­venir con­sid­er­able.

Quant a l'aine, il suc­ced­era a son pere, lorsque l'age de la re­traite son­nera pour celui-​ci. Par lui seront alors con­duits vapeurs et cha­lands, de Vi­enne a la mer, dans les pass­es sin­ueuses et en­tre les bancs per­fides du grand fleuve; par lui se per­petuera la race des Pi­lotes du Danube.

Mais, quelle que soit la dif­fer­ence de leurs po­si­tions, des trois fils de Serge Lad­ko le coeur bat a l'unis­son. Aigu­illes par la vie sur des routes di­ver­gentes, ils se ren­con­trent tou­jours a ces car­refours: une meme ven­er­ation pour leur pere, une egale ten­dresse pour leur mere, un pareil amour de la pa­trie bul­gare.

IN­DEM­NI­TY - You agree to in­dem­ni­fy and hold the Foun­da­tion, the trade­mark own­er, any agent or em­ploy­ee of the Foun­da­tion, any­one pro­vid­ing copies of Project Guten­berg-​tm elec­tron­ic works in ac­cor­dance with this agree­ment, and any vol­un­teers as­so­ci­at­ed with the pro­duc­tion, pro­mo­tion and dis­tri­bu­tion of Project Guten­berg-​tm elec­tron­ic works, harm­less from all li­abil­ity, costs and ex­pens­es, in­clud­ing le­gal fees, that arise di­rect­ly or in­di­rect­ly from any of the fol­low­ing which you do or cause to oc­cur: (a) dis­tri­bu­tion of this or any Project Guten­berg-​tm work, (b) al­ter­ation, mod­ifi­ca­tion, or ad­di­tions or dele­tions to any Project Guten­berg-​tm work, and (c) any De­fect you cause.

Sec­tion 4. In­for­ma­tion about Do­na­tions to the Project Guten­berg Lit­er­ary Archive Foun­da­tion

Project Guten­berg-​tm de­pends up­on and can­not sur­vive with­out wide spread pub­lic sup­port and do­na­tions to car­ry out its mis­sion of in­creas­ing the num­ber of pub­lic do­main and li­censed works that can be freely dis­tribut­ed in ma­chine read­able form ac­ces­si­ble by the widest ar­ray of equip­ment in­clud­ing out­dat­ed equip­ment. Many small do­na­tions ($1 to $5,000) are par­tic­ular­ly im­por­tant to main­tain­ing tax ex­empt sta­tus with the IRS.

The Foun­da­tion is com­mit­ted to com­ply­ing with the laws reg­ulat­ing char­ities and char­ita­ble do­na­tions in all 50 states of the Unit­ed States. Com­pli­ance re­quire­ments are not uni­form and it takes a con­sid­er­able ef­fort, much pa­per­work and many fees to meet and keep up with these re­quire­ments. We do not so­lic­it do­na­tions in lo­ca­tions where we have not re­ceived writ­ten con­fir­ma­tion of com­pli­ance. Pro­fes­sor Michael S. Hart is the orig­ina­tor of the Project Guten­berg-​tm con­cept of a li­brary of elec­tron­ic works that could be freely shared with any­one. For thir­ty years, he pro­duced and dis­tribut­ed Project Guten­berg-​tm eBooks with on­ly a loose net­work of vol­un­teer sup­port.

Project Guten­berg-​tm eBooks are of­ten cre­at­ed from sev­er­al print­ed edi­tions, all of which are con­firmed as Pub­lic Do­main in the U.S. un­less a copy­right no­tice is in­clud­ed. Thus, we do not nec­es­sar­ily keep eBooks in com­pli­ance with any par­tic­ular pa­per edi­tion.

Each eBook is in a sub­di­rec­to­ry of the same num­ber as the eBook's eBook num­ber, of­ten in sev­er­al for­mats in­clud­ing plain vanil­la ASCII, com­pressed (zipped), HTML and oth­ers.

Cor­rect­ed EDI­TIONS of our eBooks re­place the old file and take over the old file­name and etext num­ber. The re­placed old­er file is re­named. VER­SIONS based on sep­arate sources are treat­ed as new eBooks re­ceiv­ing new file­names and etext num­bers.

EBooks post­ed since Novem­ber 2003, with etext num­bers OVER #10000, are filed in a dif­fer­ent way. The year of a re­lease date is no longer part of the di­rec­to­ry path. The path is based on the etext num­ber (which is iden­ti­cal to the file­name). The path to the file is made up of sin­gle dig­its cor­re­spond­ing to all but the last dig­it in the file­name. For ex­am­ple an eBook of file­name 10234 would be found at:
