Con­clu­sion.

C'était à l'ex­trémité de la mer de Behring, sur la dernière des Aléou­ti­ennes, l'île Ble­jinic, que tout le per­son­nel du Fort- Es­pérance avait pris terre, après avoir franchi plus de dix-​huit cents milles depuis la débâ­cle des glaces! Des pêcheurs aléou­tiens, ac­cou­rus à leur sec­ours, les ac­cueil­lirent hos­pi­tal­ière­ment. Bi­en­tôt même, le lieu­tenant Hob­son et les siens furent mis en re­la­tion avec les agents anglais du con­ti­nent, qui ap­parte­naient à la Com­pag­nie de la baie d'Hud­son.

Il est inu­tile de faire ressor­tir, après ce réc­it dé­tail­lé, le courage de tous ces braves gens, bi­en dignes de leur chef, et l'én­ergie qu'ils avaient mon­trée pen­dant cette longue série d'épreuves. Le coeur ne leur avait pas man­qué, ni à ces hommes ni à ces femmes, auxquels la vail­lante Pauli­na Bar­nett avait tou­jours don­né l'ex­em­ple de l'én­ergie dans la détresse, et de la résig­na­tion aux volon­tés du Ciel. Si la ten­ta­tive de la Com­pag­nie était à repren­dre, si le nou­veau fort avait péri, nul ne pou­vait le re­procher à Jasper Hob­son ni à ses com­pagnons, qui avaient été soumis à des éven­tu­al­ités en de­hors des prévi­sions hu­maines. En tout cas, des dix-​neuf per­son­nes con­fiées au lieu­tenant, pas une ne man­quait au re­tour, et même la pe­tite colonie s'était ac­crue de deux nou­veaux mem­bres, la je­une Es­quimaude Kalumah et l'en­fant du char­pen­tier Mac Nap, le filleul de Mrs. Pauli­na Bar­nett.

Six jours après le sauve­tage, les naufragés ar­rivaient à New- Arkhangel, la cap­itale de l'Amérique russe.

Là, tous ces amis, qui avaient été si étroite­ment at­tachés les uns aux autres par le dan­ger com­mun, al­laient se sé­par­er pour ja­mais, peut-​être! Jasper Hob­son et les siens de­vaient re­gag­ner le Fort- Re­liance à travers les ter­ri­toires de la Com­pag­nie, tan­dis que Mrs. Pauli­na Bar­nett, Kalumah qui ne voulait plus se sé­par­er d'elle, Madge et Thomas Black comp­taient re­tourn­er en Eu­rope par San Fran­cis­co et les États-​Unis. Trois hur­rahs éclatèrent en l'hon­neur de Mrs. Pauli­na Bar­nett. Puis cha­cun des sol­dats voulut ser­rer la main de la vail­lante voyageuse. Cha­cune des femmes l'em­bras­sa avec ef­fu­sion.

Quant au lieu­tenant Hob­son, qui avait conçu pour Mrs. Pauli­na Bar­nett une af­fec­tion si sincère, ce fut le coeur bi­en gros qu'il lui don­na la dernière poignée de main.

«Est-​ce qu'il est pos­si­ble que nous ne nous revoyions pas un jour? dit-​il.

-- Non, Jasper Hob­son, répon­dit la voyageuse, non, ce n'est pas pos­si­ble! Et si vous ne venez pas en Eu­rope, c'est moi qui re­viendrai vous retrou­ver ici... ici ou dans la nou­velle fac­torerie que vous fonderez un jour...»

En ce mo­ment, Thomas Black, qui, depuis qu'il ve­nait de repren­dre pied sur la terre ferme, avait retrou­vé la pa­role, s'avança:

The in­va­lid­ity or un­en­force­abil­ity of any pro­vi­sion of this agree­ment shall not void the re­main­ing pro­vi­sions.

Sec­tion 4. In­for­ma­tion about Do­na­tions to the Project Guten­berg Lit­er­ary Archive Foun­da­tion

Project Guten­berg-​tm de­pends up­on and can­not sur­vive with­out wide spread pub­lic sup­port and do­na­tions to car­ry out its mis­sion of in­creas­ing the num­ber of pub­lic do­main and li­censed works that can be freely dis­tribut­ed in ma­chine read­able form ac­ces­si­ble by the widest ar­ray of equip­ment in­clud­ing out­dat­ed equip­ment. Many small do­na­tions ($1 to $5,000) are par­tic­ular­ly im­por­tant to main­tain­ing tax ex­empt sta­tus with the IRS.

The Foun­da­tion is com­mit­ted to com­ply­ing with the laws reg­ulat­ing char­ities and char­ita­ble do­na­tions in all 50 states of the Unit­ed States. Com­pli­ance re­quire­ments are not uni­form and it takes a con­sid­er­able ef­fort, much pa­per­work and many fees to meet and keep up with these re­quire­ments. We do not so­lic­it do­na­tions in lo­ca­tions where we have not re­ceived writ­ten con­fir­ma­tion of com­pli­ance. While we can­not and do not so­lic­it con­tri­bu­tions from states where we have not met the so­lic­ita­tion re­quire­ments, we know of no pro­hi­bi­tion against ac­cept­ing un­so­licit­ed do­na­tions from donors in such states who ap­proach us with of­fers to do­nate.

In­ter­na­tion­al do­na­tions are grate­ful­ly ac­cept­ed, but we can­not make any state­ments con­cern­ing tax treat­ment of do­na­tions re­ceived from out­side the Unit­ed States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Project Guten­berg-​tm eBooks are of­ten cre­at­ed from sev­er­al print­ed edi­tions, all of which are con­firmed as Pub­lic Do­main in the U.S. un­less a copy­right no­tice is in­clud­ed. Thus, we do not nec­es­sar­ily keep eBooks in com­pli­ance with any par­tic­ular pa­per edi­tion.
