View Japanese font in Stanza/PDF
I want to view a pdf file which contains Japanese fonts (hiragana, katakana, kanji) on my iTouch. The origin of the pdf is Japanesepod101.com and it views fine in Adobe Reader etc.
When I attempt to view the original pdf file in Stanza desktop, the text is converted to a string of ascii question marks.
Could you please let me know if:
- there is a way I can view the pdf in Stanza on the desktop and on my iTouch
- if not, whether you have plans to include this as a feature in future
- if not, whether there is a known workaround.
Thanks for your great product. Sorry in advance if this is an FAQ but I couldn't see it on the forum/google.

Stanza does support Japanese
Stanza does support Japanese characters, but it does not yet support embedded fonts, which may be what your PDF is using. If you copy the text from the PDF and paste it into a text application (like Notepad.exe or TextEdit.app) do the Japanese characters show up for you? If so, then you should be able to just save the file as text, HTML, or RTF, then open it in Stanza Desktop and the characters should show up for you.
Mouse Wheel Support
I guess it's pretty obvious if you haven't added mouse wheel scroll support since the summer of 2008 (based on the remarks here), you're never going to (shouldn't have taken you more than 20 minutes to add it). Do you guys ever update this application? I might as well read via HTML. At least it'll scroll with the mouse wheel. How about direct access to Gutenberg book repository without having to use a separate browser to download it first? It's sad there are no better ebook readers than this in 2009 for the Mac.
I'm having a lot of
I'm having a lot of diffuiculty downloading books on Stanza, how do you do it? If someone could explain it to me with directions, I'd get more out of this.
Thank you,
Amber
Are you trying to share your
Are you trying to share your own books? If so, you can try following the instructions at http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone. Otherwise, can you let us know what specific problems you are having?
Iphone freeze
I'm having trouble with the sharing function on the iphone. It's now frozen, a grayed-out message.
I have rebooted the phone several times and all the other functions seem to work. But that grayed message (with no circle moving to show anything actually being loaded) is still there. Also, it took me several tries over two days to get Stanza to work properly on the phone. Kept getting catalogue error messages.
On my macbook, I have loaded the latest version, enable the sharing, on the same wireless network, etc.
any ideas?
thanks.
Problem with iPhone version
NOTE: I found the problem -- it was an inverted apostrophe in the title. It does seem to import Mobipocket format well, but does not recognize chapters properly in others (fb2, html, etc.). It would be quite useful if one could edit the metadata on the desktop.
Some books export well to iPhone, others will not. In order to get all the chapters, some have to be in MobiPocket format -- but iPhone chokes on a file without an author (gives [NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:] attempt to insert nil value (key:author)), and it's not possible to put in any metadata on the Mac Desktop version. If there's no title or author, iPhone will recognize it, but will not give it a proper title. Recognizing all the chapters is very problematic on both versions -- if the chapters are in BookDesigner, the Mac version will recognize chapters in a generated mobipocket file (but this can't be transferred to the iPhone because it doesn't have an author), but will not recognize chapters in a generated fb2 or htm file.
Thank you for the report. The
Thank you for the report. The problem with the crash when the author is unknown will be fixed for the next update to Stanza on the iPhone App Store.
We are also looking into improvements in the chapter identification with the fb2 files, as well as some of the formatting issues.
Book title?
Whenever I either open an existing PDF or doc or create a new eBook from clipboard the default book-title is "unknown" and it doesn't seem possible to change it.
This is especially troubling if I want to share the books with my iPod as they have a blank name there which makes it quite hard to diffenrentiate between books...
Is there a solution to this?
Otherwise thanks for the great app, especially the iPod/iPhone app it wonderful!
Scrolling
Hi,
Is there any way to scroll pages using mouse?
RE: Scrolling
Not currently, but we are planning on implementing the ability to use the mouse wheel to switch pages. Is that what you were hoping to be able to do, or do you have another means of mouse-navigation that you were hoping to be able to use?
Scrolling
Yes, that's exactly what I meant, also being able to switch pages back and forth using right&left clicks would be great too.
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion. We will add it to our list of desired features!

What is the error message you receive (if any)?
Any are you certain you are using the latest release (beta 4)? You might try downloading again and running it, just to be sure.
stanza doesn't open
yes. i just downloaded stanza 4 beta again. no dice. thanks for your interest. elsie
Do you see any error message?
Do you see any error message, or does it just not open? If you run Console.app while you are launching Stanza, do you see any messages related to a failure to launch?
eBook Library?
I would like to know if there are any plans on creating an iTunes-like overview of all books that one has.
Library interface
That is indeed high on our list of features for a future version of Stanza. Once the current feature set is stable, we do plan on exploring the possibility of making Stanza into your one-stop eBook organizer.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Ditto
I was going to make the same suggestion about the iTunes like interface, that will make this the killer eBook app for Mac. I can't wait to see if you have an iPhone version for reading books on iPhone 2. If you do then I will have a hard decision, Kindle or iPhone. You guys are doing a great job! Keep it up!
iStanza :)
Excellent, that's good to hear! Looking forward to it!
File browser shows hidden/system files
When I use File->Open, I get a list of *all* files on my system, including hidden and system files (the ones with the dot in front of their names)
While not necessarily "dangerous" or anything, it does make finding books a bit more difficult and is generally visually not too appealing.
Hidden folders
Thanks for letting us know about it. We have confirmed that Stanza is improperly showing folders that should be hidden. You are correct that it is merely aesthetically unpleasant and not dangerous, but we expect to have it fixed in the near future.
version of Mac OS X
Hi, when I try to open Stanza it tells me that I don't have the right version. But my version is 10.4.11.
i tried this on two different machines. Same result.
am I missing something?
looks like very cool software!

Try out the latest release
There was indeed a problem with launching Stanza on OS 10.4 (Tiger). We have since released a new beta (beta 4) that should address the problem. Can you try downloading the latest beta and letting us know if you still have the problem?
