iPhone Feature Requests

Thanks so much for creating the iPhone edition of this software. It has become my favorite document reader. I do have two feature requests for future iterations of the iPhone software.

1: I'd like a preference to allow for returning to the last open document and page upon launch of Stanza. Currently the requirement of tapping through the lists to get to the currently open document is cumbersome, particularly when you have to use the iPhone "Settings" App for every little preference change. I'd like to open Stanza and have my current book open to my last page read as an option.

2: I'd like the the option to change the page reverse and advance screen taps to include top of page and bottom of page taps. If I'm holding the iPhone in one hand, particularly the left hand, it is easier to flip pages forward and back by tapping at the top or bottom of the screen rather than by reaching across the screen to do the right hand tap on the screen.

I would also like to add my voice requesting the option of an autoscroll as well. (I've voted in the Poll.)

Thanks again for the awesome document reader and I appreciate having the forum to search for and request help.\

Cheers

Jon

Allow horizontal scrolling...

Tables that are too wide to fit onscreen are truncated. It would be nice to have horizontal scrolling when something doesn't fit.

Hi,
Sorry if this was covered elsewhere, but I can't seem to find it.
Stanza works great on my iPhone. But, will it work on a Samsung Eternity?
Thank you.

RSVP Support Part Deux

I haven't seen any formal response other than the integration of a text scroller. I'm taking three lit classes this semester and having to use REASY (awesome) the Firefox extension in order to access Gutenberg books and apply an RSVP reader to them. Boy, I sure would like to see this available in Stanza. An RSVP reader with a touch screen interface would be incredible.

Do the authors of Stanza ever reply here?
TIA

Wow. And you used a bugmenot login. Classy. Quite an illiterate post on a board for an ebook reader.

A way to stretch to fit cover to not take two pages

I only have a small problem with this, but some of my book covers are split into two pages, usually only cutting off the Author's name at the bottom. I have tried to zoom out and save the "font" size, but this doesn't work. I don't even mind if there's white space on the left and right sides, although a black background/wood texture would be preferable.

thank you :)

feature request: paste to ebook

I would love to be able to have a better (Stanza-like) interface for text I try to read in Safari on the iPhone. I think the most convenient way to accomplish that would be to copy the text I want to read in Safari, open Stanza, "create new book", "paste", "save", and read it.

Instapaper almost works for this purpose -- the problem is that it only seems to work 50% of the time; the rest of the time the site is password protected or the text comes out formatted wrong. Aside from those problems though, I'd rather stick to reading text in Stanza; it's a better reading interface!

Not sure this one is really feasible.

While I understand your desire for something to indicate the size of a book,
number of pages probably isn't going to work. Firstly, the application only
loads one "chapter" at a time - it can't see into the rest of them until you
actually get there. Secondly, number of pages is highly subjective. It can
be affected by screen size, font size, line and paragraph spacing, margins,
hard line or page breaks in the text, embedded fonts, etc. Simply rotating
the device from portrait to landscape mode can radically affect the number
of "pages" the user will need to navigate through.

Perhaps a more useful statistic would be the overall size of the file (in KB),
coupled with an indicator of where you are relative to the overall size.

They must be able to do it

If Stanza can tell me that I am 35.12% into the book, it must know the total number of pages or something similar.

Don't think # of pages is subjective at all when it comes to me. I don't care if someone else has a different #of pages for the same book because their setting are different then mine. Given that I don't change fonts, margins, or anything, Total number of pages would be a very meaningful statistic.

Size (Kb) is okay and I do use it(on the info screen), is that I would imagine the cover art varies in size between book to book.

Yes......and no.

Yes, Stanza can tell you that you are 35.12% of the way through the BOOK - that's relatively easy to compute. Simply look at where you
are currently in the book, take that as a percentage of the total book size (in bytes), and there you are. Computing your location by
PAGE, however, is highly subjective. Doing so would (at the very least) require Stanza to open, analyze, reflow, and paginate ALL of the
"chapters" (and I use this term loosely) prior to the computation. In addition, because of all the dependencies, each and every time that
ANY of those factors changed, the entire process would have to be redone. If the entire ebook was being loaded (and maintained) in
memory while you were reading it then this might not be prohibitive, but with the fact that only one chapter at a time is loaded, it seems
unlikely.

What might be possible, though, is a selectable "tell me where I am" button, which could manually invoke the recomputation process (as in that
seemingly interminable wait when opening a book for the first time) on demand ONLY. That way, at least, it wouldn't make the entire process
choke the system every time anything changes.

I wasn't trying to suggest that your request was impossible, simply that given the constraints of resources on the handheld and the current
design of the product it might not be practical.

Michael

fair enough I suppose. I do

fair enough I suppose.

I do wish Stanza would paginate the whole book the first time you open it (the way ereader does). Takes a bit of time initially, but then you are good. No pauses at chapters, no problem getting a page count. Stanza is so superior to ereader, except (imo) the way it handles the pagination and the backing up (which as I understand it is tied to the chapter by chapter pagination).

Based on the amount of time it takes ereader to initially paginate, I don't know that a 'where am I' button would be very useful. I don't mind waiting once (or if I change font, twice), but having to wait every time I press the button would make it unusable.

Display total number of pages

Hi,

Great ereader. Would really like to see the total number of pages in a book displayed. I like to know what I am getting myself into (time wise) when starting new a book. It is also nice to be able to compare the length of one book to another.

_italics_ preference

Hi lexcycle people,

First, of course, thanks for your excellent software, I've read maybe 20,000 (traditional) pages of Project Gutenberg novels on my iPhone since I downloaded Stanza. Kindle? Bah! I've got a better reader in my pocket thanks to your software.

OK, on the the point at hand, it seems to be a convention in etexts that _something_ means that "something" should be italicized.

I suggest adding an option in the Appearance settings that would automatically italicize text that falls between two underscores.

Off by default, but available for those of us who like to see the text rendered in itals when it's clearly meant to be.

Cheers,

-Chris

您好我想問我怎樣在iPhone內的簡體小說上過回電腦到呢?因為我想改回繁體後先過落iPhone到!謝謝!

% of chapter read

When showing % of book read, could you also show % of current chapter read? This would help decide whether to keep reading to end of chapter or it'll take a while & I should break mid-chapter.
Thanks!

Pretty much already has this functionality

When you tap the page, to see the % into book, it already shows you how many pages are in the chapter and also what page of the chapter you are on. For example: Page 38/49.

Not sure what value a % of chapter would add.

Hello !

Trying new foods and flavors is so important to healthful eating. I simply do not accept the idea of a repetitive diet to be a health-minded or enjoyable one. Moderation, mindfulness, and balance are the root of healthy meals, and variety can help you find excitement and satisfaction. Take your plate on a trip to Africa as I did in my most recent cooking class. I noticed the use of a lot of curries and onions in their dishes: thus, big and spicy (not hot) flavors.

BACKUP ALL EBOOKS AT ONCE WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTORE IPOD TOUCH

I WANT A BACKUP FUNCTION THAT YOU CAN RESTORE YOUR BOOKS FROM A BACKUP WITHIN STANZA WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE. EVERYONE KNOWS RESTORING FROM A BACKUP CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS AND IN THE END YOU HAVE TO YOUR DEVICE UP AS NEW. I HAVE OVER 390 EBOOKS AND I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO RESTORE THEM ALL ONE BY ONE. STANZA HAS MADE A JAVA SCRIPT BUT THIS IS TO NO USE FOR MYSELF AS I AM A WORKING MOTHER WHO DOES NOT HAVE TIME TO ADD MY 390 EBOOKS ONE BY ONE. THIS IS A FUNCTION THAT I AND MANY OTHERS WANT NOT NEED. I HAVE ENCOUNTERED MANY PROBLEMS WITH UPDATING STANZA AND HAVE LOST MY EBOOKS TWICE NOW. I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF STANZA WOULD REALISE THAT ONE CAN ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS WITH UPDATING STANZA AND ONES DEVICE. I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT DEVELOPERS WOULD HAVE REALISED THAT SOME CUSTOMERS HAVE MANY HUNDREDS OF EBOOKS THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED AND IF A PROBLEMS OCCUR WITH STANZA OR ONES DEVICE FOR EXAMPLE THAT THEY HAD A SOLUTION. PLEASE CAN OTHERS SPEAK OUT ABOUT THIS. I WANT A BACKUP FUNCTION THAT I CAN RESTORE ALL MY EBOOKS FROM WITHIN STANZA AT ONE TIME WITHOUT RESTORING MY IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE. PLEASE STANZA MAKE THIS REQUEST AVAILABLE. THIS WOULD BE A PERFECT APPLICATION IF IT HAD THIS FEATURE. THANK YOU

ALL CAPS

I GUESS YOU DON'T REALIZE THAT USING ALL CAPS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF SCREAMING IN A LIBRARY.

MEANING THAT IT'S RUDE AND ANNOYING.

Please realize it now.

Also, feel free to use paragraphs; they exist for a reason.

re:all caps

Who cares if ther person wrote in all caps. There is no real rule about it. You obviously have to much time on your hand to critique another person. If this is your soul goal in life? maybe consider teaching grammer to first graders. Using caps is not shouting its just a convienent way for a person to type. If you dont like i suggest C you dont read it. Shouting as all caps poppy cock, Just because someone decides thats all caps is shouting does not make it so. It just means that person who thinks that has a low self esteem. My suggestion is get a life just not anyone of the users here.

In this 'online' world, all

In this 'online' world, all caps is widely accepted to be the equivalent of shouting, thus many won't take the post seriously. Even if you don't believe all caps is like 'shouting', it is hard to read, thus likely not to be read - definitely not the best way to get your point across.

I disagree here. It was

I disagree here. It was pointed out politely enough. If an item is typed in all caps I will very often not bother reading it which is probably not what the poster was looking for.

Need to be able to sort by book title

The current title sort does it based on the author. It's kind of pointless because it's basically the same as author sort. The title sort should be able sort the books regardless of who the author is. For example:

title sort:
(A)rt of war, by sun tzu
(H)arry potter, by j. k. rowling

author sort:
harry potter, by (J). k. rowling
art of war, by (S)un tzu

I have no problems sorting

I have no problems sorting separately by author and by title. One change with the 2.0 release was that it now sorts by the first letter of the Surname rather the first letter of the Forename.

The only thing that occurs to me - on the books you are trying is the author part of the title rather than held separately in the book metadata? That might explain your symptoms as Stanza would not realise you had the author name embedded in the title.

BACK UP FUNCTION

I AM A WORKING MOTHER AND I HAVE I DOWNLOADED A COUPLE OF HUNDRED EBOOKS, I AM FRUSTRATED BY THE FACT THAT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH STANZA OR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE THAT WE HAVE TO RESTORE FROM A BACKUP. EVERYBODY KNOWS RESTORING FROM A BACKUP CAUSES A MANY PROBLEMS AND END UP SETTING UP AS A KNEW IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE. I WOULD LIKE A SEPERATE BACKUP FUNCTION THAT YOU CAN DO FROM WITHIN STANZA. THERE ARE MANY APPS AVAILABLE WITH THIS FUNCTION FOR EXAMPLE AMBIANCE, IT IS A MP3 RELAXING MUSIC APP THAT BACKSUP YOUR DOWNLOADS INCASE OF ANY PROBLEMS. PLEASE PEOPLE KEEP ASKING FOR THIS FUNCTION AND MAYBY STANZA WILL LISTEN TO OUR NEEDS. THIS IS A FUNCTION I NEED NOT WANT. PLEASE STANZA MAKE THIS AVAILABLE AND I WOULD RATE YOU 5 STARS

automatically add book source & directory as Subjects

Right now, after a book is downloaded from a given catalog and a given directory path within that catalog, this information is lost.
Some books have subjects in their metadata, but many don't, so it becomes hard to sort books by genre. Within the catalogs, the books typically _are_ grouped by genre, so the directory path to a book within its Stanza on-line catalog is a good proxy for a book's subject.

So, could you please add an option to automatically add to any book downloaded from a Stanza catalog, a Subject based on the book's path within the catalog? Then you could easily find books on a given subject.

add search for book by book/author name

Please add the option to search for a book by book name/author/other metadata. It is essential when your on-the-phone library has many books. Note also that the letter index on the right of the screen only supports Latin characters, so it is useless e.g. for cyrillic books.

Thanks!

BEST NEW FEATURE WOULD BE TITLE SEARCH

I HAVE OVER 660 TITLES ON MY IPHONE OF VARIOUS EBOOKS. WHAT I FIND VERY FRUSTRATING WITH STANZA IS THE INABILITY TO INITIATE A TITLE SEARCH TO SEARCH FOR A PARTICULAR TITLE OR AUTHOR AND BRING UP THE SEARCH ITEMS THAT CONTAIN THE WORD I AM LOOKIN FOR EITHER IN THE THE TITLE OR AUTHOR OF THE BOOK. FOR EXAMPLE I WOULD ENTER "DILBERT" AND IT WOULD FIND THE WORD DILBERT IN THE TITLES OR AUTHORS, JUST LIKE MICROSOFT EBOOK DOES. IS IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO ADD THIS FEATURE? IT WOULD MAKE LIFE WITH STANZA SO MUCH MORE BETTER.

ONE OTHER THING I FOUND STANZA TO BE THE BEST EBOOK READER THAT I HAVE FOUND. I HAVE SEEN MANY AND USED MANY IN PARTICULAR MICROSOFT EBOOK AND BOTTOM LINE ITS A TOP NOTCH APP.
WHAT I LIKE BEST? THE PAGE TURNING EFFECT THAT MAKES MY PAGE SEEM LIKE A BOOK I GET A REAL KICK OUT OF IT.

PLEASE ADD THE SEARCHABLE FIELDS AND MAKE IT EVEN BETTER!

AVID READER

autogenerate collections "read, unread, partly read"

The visual indicators for read and unread are great.

Like others, I've been manually creating 'read' and 'unread' collections. These are a pain to maintain.

Could you please add "smart collections" (e.g. autogenerated)?

I'd suggest
* Read
* Unread
* Partly Read

In the end, there might be some need to customize. (E.g. If I've read 95% or 2%, how do I want those to show up?) but I think creating 3 groups as above would help tremendously!

Seconded!

I'd like this function, too. Great suggestion.

Post quote to tumblr

Tumblr is beyond a doubt the best micro blogging engine for publishing quotes it would be so cool to be able to post directly from stanza.

Swapping right/left page turns

Stanza is wonderful, and I'm enjoying 2.0! I have two suggestions for future releases:

* I'd love to be able to change whether a right screen tap advances the page, or turns back one page, with one click. I alternate between the two depending on whether I'm doing something else (like eating or drinking) with my right hand. It's wonderful to be able to change what right and left screen taps do, but it would be even better if I could reverse those functions with a single tap (and put that button on the menu bar at the bottom of the screen while I'm reading).

* I really like the little circle that shows how far I am into reading the book, but since I've imported into Stanza a lot of books that I've already read, it would be great to have a manual way to mark a book as read too. (I do use an 'Unread' tag/subject.)

I also like the suggestion by others to allow for a sort by series.

Thanks for Stanza -- I read almost exclusively ebooks these days, and Stanza is my reader of choice.

Links are not clickable

When making an epub book using rss feeds, the links do not work. If you click on one of the links, instead of taking you to the article it takes you to the first page of the book. This is despite working in all other readers including kindle, calibre, ereader, etc...

Book Navigation

Something 'minor' but i think would be great for the aesthetics of using Stanza, something that can give it an even more realisitic reading experience. I think it would be great if Stanza had it's own version of Iceberg Reader's "Book Navigation", where you're able to get a visual illustration of the spine of a book and see where you're up to just as if you were looking at the real book.

SEARCH does not allow a single char as 'keywords'

I am very happy to find out stanza. It works great as my Chinese e-Book reader (in UTF8 encoding, of course).

Unfortunately, I encounter a situation where stanza on the ipod touch does not allow me to use a single Chinese character as the search entry. The pop up dialogue says that it needs a keyword of at least two chars in length. The search functionality does not generate the sentence list where the character resides. However, the book's content does have the character high lighted. At first, the restriction seems strange. Then, I realize that a single char for search does not make sense in English literature. For example, using 'e' as the search entry would result in vast and useless hits.

In unicode encoding scheme, a Chinese character and a latin alphabet has the same char length—they are both of a single char. However, searching for a single Chinese char has its usage. It's just like searching a word in a book, or an entry in a dictionary.

So, can this restriction on search be lifted?

My stanza is version 2.0. My ipod touch runs OS 3.1.2. My desktop computer runs Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Power PC chip).

Web download via servers

It would be nice to download from web disk servers such as mobileme, box.net, or other webdav servers. I think this would be better than a personal webpage on your computer. When traveling I use web disk storage. Take a look at the iPhone app, GoodReader, for pdf. They use this type of web server.

Thanks

John

Feature request

Please add "sort by series" for the iPhone/iTouch app. I have several series, by several different authors I'd like to read in order. I think this would be VERY helpful.

Thanks,
Jason Lodas

Yes please!

I would love to be able to sort by series (and then numbers within that series). Because Calibre allows the user to edit this field, having Stanza actually use it would be great!

Seconded!

I'd like that option, too. Great suggestion.

Stanza Desktop

Most of the time I transfer books just using the iPhone app's browser, but as this has not been working in the latest release and since the latest release required me to reinstall all the protected content I currently have, I used Stanza Desktop to accomplish this. Stanza Desktop is unable to actually read protected books, which is fine with me, since my desktop is not where I want to read them anyway, but it requires you open a window for each book as if you were going to read it. Selecting all 80+ books and opening them all up so I could download them in one click worked, but I think it would be better if Stanza Desktop could handle managing and transferring a library in a manner more similar to how music management software operates, keeping a "library" of all books that have been added.

Would be nice to have book sharing between devices, where free books could be exchanged, and paid books could "share" the site to purchase them from.

Copy & Paste

Is there a legal reason why Copy & Paste has not been implemented? My annotations are useless to me if I can't get them out of the iPhone app.

Thanks! That's my only complaint...but it's kind of a big one.

I thought Copy and Paste was

I thought Copy and Paste was implemented in the recently released 2.0 verfsion of Stanza.

You're right it is! Just

You're right it is! Just seems to be broken on one of my books…very strange. Guess I should file a bug report?

pre-fetching pages with footnotes

Following a footnote often takes a while, and this matters for texts with many footnotes. Can this be improved, perhaps by pre-rendering page(s) referenced from the about-to-be-read page during idle time? Switching from page to the next is instantaneous -- switching from page to a footnote
it references, and jumping back, should also be.

Thanks!

BACK UP WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTORE IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE??!!!

Back up feature as I am disabled and a working mother who does not have time to restore my 64GB Ipod Touch. I want a back up feature that is similar to the Ambiance Application, that you can back up and send the back up file to a save place i.e computer/laptop and then open your back up file from within Stanza if you need to restore. I believe that restoring your iPod Touch to fix any problems you are having with Stanza is terriable. Everyone knows that when you restore your iPod touch/iPhone that it creates a multitude of problems and in the end you have to restore from new, so there is no point to this app if everytime you have any problems you need to restore. Restoring your iPod touch/iPhone takes at least 24 hours with larger memory units, I do not have the time to do this and it makes myself very upset when I have spent months loading ebooks onto Stanza and I lose them and have to start all over again. Please Stanza listen to yours customers and provide this feature. I am one of many who needs this feature. Please customers keep asking for this and do not let Stanza forget about this, there is power in numbers if we persit in requesting this hopefully we will get what we need. If anyone else thinks and feels the same as myself please leave a comment or contact myself. Please Stanza many people with get iPod touch/iPhone for Christmas and this feature would be a great Christmas present. Stanza please show customers you are listening to these requests by providing this backup feature. I would give Stanza 10 out of 10 if it had a back up feature. Thank all for listening. Remember keep asking and keep this request for a backup going.

No export of notes, annotations?

Half-way through reading my first book in Stanza, I had just assumed that I would be able to save/export my notes. Really, it's the primary reason that I want an eReader, is to be able to highlight passages, take notes, and then use them in various ways following the reading of the book.

Very disappointed to discover that this is not included in "the most populare eReader on the iPhone." It seems like such basic functionality that I'm a bit rattled.

Perhaps I should put Stanza back on the shelf until such a feature is present. And, to be clear, I'd pay for a full-featured app if that's what it takes.

This is my #1 feature

This is my #1 feature request, it's really my ONLY feature request. I read business books on here and make notes/annotations for future reference... being able to export those to some kind of RTF format would be the thing that makes this the best reader out there. I'll also be clear like someone else said. I'd be willing to pay a reasonable app store fee for a full-featured app with this in there.

Portable reader should export annotations

Withak, this really is a severe limitation and a small fix that should be included in future upgrades. Think about it: If one is reading on the fly, one may want to be able to export one's annotations later. Ideally, for scholarly purposes, those annotations should include the physical page number (which should be encoded in Project Gutenberg, but might not be). Even if one had to look up the page numbers in a physical copy later, being able to export the annotations at least as .txt., .rtf, or .doc would be a huge timesaver-- .txt files could be used in other apps, e.g. EndNote or for recoding as HTML. I'm a doctoral student in English and use my iPod Touch as a research and teaching tool, and I would deeply appreciate not having to retype my annotations. Otherwise, I adore this app.

What ebook app on the iPhone

What ebook app on the iPhone can do that? Perhaps you should have done a little more research first?

Having books by Series

I was wondering is there a way to organize books by series , I see on my Itouch we got Titles , Authors, Subjects But nothing about Series I have SO MANY books and would be great to have them downloaded / Properly into Series as I dont always have Wifi to get it from Shared books - Library.

And if I go to titles or Authors they are not in order of Series. So I have to hunt down the proper book.

Can't access all of large Fictionwise library

Hi, I just started using Stanza and I love it.
I have about 250 books in my fictionwise bookshelf, but stanza only seems to load the first 53 in the list so you can download them. Is there a way to get more? If not, could you please implement this.
thanks

BACKUP DATA FILE TO BE MADE SO YOU CAN BACKUP WITHOUT RESTORING!

STANZA CUSTOMERS NEED A BACKUP FUNCTION THAT YOU CAN SAVE ALL THE DATA TO A FILE AND THEN SEND IT TO YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS, THEN YOU SAVE IT ON YOUR COMPUTER TO A SAVE PLACE, AND THEN IF YOU LOOSE OR DELETE ANY FILES ON YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE YOU CAN BACKUP FROM WITHIN THE APP WITHOUT HAVING TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE. AS WE ALL KNOW THAT RESTORING YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE CAUSES MANY PROBLEMS AND IN THE END YOU HAVE TO RESTORE FROM NEW. I HAVE PURCHASED MANY EBOOKS FROM WITHIN STANZA AND WANT THE ABILITY TO BE ABLE TO RESTORE THEM IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HAVING TO RESTORE MY IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE. RESTORING TAKES AROUND 20 HOURS WHEN YOU HAVE LARGER MEMORY UNITS. PLEASE CAN STANZA LISTEN TO ITS CUSTOMERS AND SUPPLY THIS FUNCTION, AS I SEE NO USE TO THESE FORUMS IF STANZA DOES NOT TAKE THESE REQUESTS SERIOUSLY? I AM A WORKING MOTHER AND DO NOT THE TIME TO KEEP RESTORING WHEN I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH STANZA. I HAVE AN APPLICATION CALLED AMBIANCE ON MY IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE THAT IS AN APP FOR RELAXING. THEY HAVE A FUNCTION THAT HAS THE ABILITY TO DO WHAT I AM ASKING STANZA TO DO HERE, WHERE YOU CLICK BACKUP FROM INSIDE THE APP AND IT SENDS THE BACKUP DATA TO YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND YOU SAVE IT TO YOUR COMPUTER IN A SAVE PLACE INCASE ANYTHING GOES WRONG, SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DOWNLOAD EVERYTHING AGAIN. THEY LISTENED TO THERE CUSTOMERS AND MADE THIS FUNCTION AVAILABLE. I HAVE READ MANY MANY COMMENTS IN THESE FORUMS REGARDING A BACKUP FUNCTION THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE RESTORING YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE FROM PREVIOUS BACKUPS. I FIND THE WHOLE IDEA OF HAVING TO RESTORE YOUR IPOD TOUCH/IPHONE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS JUST TO FIX ANY PROBLEMS YOU HAVE WITH STANZA DELETING YOU EBOOKS. STANZA SHOULD HAVE SORTED THIS PROBLEM OUT A LONG TIME AGO. I KNOW THAT CUSTOMERS WILL BE STILL ASKING FOR THIS FUNCTION IN 2010 AS THEY HAVE BEEN ASKING FOR MONTHS NOW TO NO AVAIL AND THE PROBLEM STILL HAS NOT BEEN RECTIFIED.

Autoscroll!

If possible with sweeps to define the speed of auto-scrolling.

J-Baby's picture

Please add auto-scrolling!

Please add auto-scrolling! I've watched the preview of Stanza 2.0 and I didn't see that as a feature. I really hope it is there and you just didn't demonstrate it.

permanent orientation lock

Can there be an option to permanently lock the orientation to landscape? Right now, when the app exits, the next time you start it, it chooses orientation based on the current physical orientation of the phone. Afterwards, the orientation can get locked. If the phone was tilted the wrong way when Stanza started, you have to unlock the orientation, fix it, then lock it again. It would be much better if the locked orientation was saved on exit and restored on next app launch.

sorting books by size

It would be good if there was a command to list downloaded books by size, largest first, so that if I need to quickly free up space on the iPhone, I know which books to delete.

view downloaded books by online source

Right now when books are downloaded from an online source, their original location is lost.
It would be great if this was saved, and then you could browse (when offline) a menu that goes
Online catalog -> Fiction -> (books in my library downloaded from this Online catalog's Fiction directory).

Naming bookmarks

Would love to be able to name bookmarks. I often read passages to

My classses, and need more than x% into the book!

actually you can, the x% is

actually you can, the x% is just a suggestion for the bookmark name that is automatically generated -- you can then edit it into what you want.

saving notes and annotations for later use

ONe of the features on ereader (for palm) that was very important to my reading was being able to save all my notes and annotations into one document file.

If stanza cannot do this, it should in the future. Then students and researcher could highlight and compile quotations (with pages from edoc) into one place for future use in papers etc.

Man, I need this and miss it very much in these new iphone/itouch readers!!!

Thanks
Anne

Saving Annotations

I completely agree with this request. It is a major improvement that must be present in a new version. I use stanza mainly for reading books for the public concourses I am taking and having my annotations and quotations in a single file would be great.
I love this app. Thanks very much.

Saving annotations

Yes, please, this is my greatest wish too.

Book covers

This may seem really petty, especially since Stanza is the absolute best.

I would like to be able to find more choices for the book covers. I know there is the option to search the Web, but seldom are covers actually found. Yet, if I Google the book, I can find infinitely more covers than Stanza offers.

BTW, Stanza is so great I've convinced a friend to buy an ITouch, just she can use Stanza.

You might want to try using

You might want to try using Calibre rather than Stanza for the ebook-management facility. Amongst other capabilities it provides comprehensive facilities for searching for covers and also allows you to provide cover images manually.

Since it also includes a built-in web server for exposing any books managed by Calibre for as a catalog that can be used by Stanza on the iPhone/iTouch it works particularily well with them.

"publish" with underlining, and either font color or highting

I'm working on a big edit project...an edition of the King James Bible no less. The whole purpose of the edition is to delineate different content, so I need to be able to underline text, and either control the font color or highlight selected text (think red letter bible). Also, I haven't found a way to present a chart of information.

Frustration

I'm new to Stanza and am just learning. If I'm grumbling about something I missed excuse me.

First, I find that loading books from my computer is difficult and cumbersome.

Second, when I sync, the books I uploaded went away.

DocsToGo is better, but it lacks bookmarking capability. I'm going back to my Palm until something changes.

My request is that either make it easier to upload books or upload more than one at a time. Oh, pick up the filename. I don't know where it gets the title, but most of mine come up "Unknown".

Thanks

There are multiple ways to

There are multiple ways to upload books as mentioned in the FAQ. Some of them allow for bulk upload.

I have never heard of the issue where a sync causes uploaded books to disappear. It should be the other way around - a sync preserves the books in case your iPhone/iTouch crashes.

The information about author, etc is not picked up from the filename but from the metadata emebedded in the file. Although it is possible to manipulate this metadata using Stanza Desktop a much friendlier and more powerful tool for doing this is the (free) Calibre e-book management system. Calibre can also handle the conversion to ePub format if your books are not already in this format.

Let me add files other than ".epub" via USB

As you know, we can add books into stanza via USB, which is great, especially for me as I have no WiFi, and I have an ipod touch, so no 3G/EDGE/GPRS either.

But, stanza only allows me to add ".epub" files. I know that Stanza Desktop application comes with an inbuilt converter, but that erases all the formatting. I lose the "italics" and "bold" text. Which is something I rather not like. So, please, Stanza, if its possible could you let me add ".lit" files via USB as well, as most of my ebooks are in that format

There is not much point as

There is not much point as the iPhone/iTouch version of Stanza cannot handle other formats - you first have to convert them to ePub.

You can do this using Stanza desktop and export the results. That should not erase the formatting (even though it is not displayed in the Desktop version).

An alternative which I personally use is to use Calibre to do all the conversion to ePub. Handles a much wider format of conversion types than Stanza desktop and on the whole does a better job of the conversion.

For The Addicted Reader...

Firstly I'd like to say that Stanza is terrific

I would like to make the following requests (Please forgive me if any of these exist, I have been unable to find/google them)

1. Ability to List by Book Series, or have the ability to see the book series number without having to change the book title to *series name number - book title*, or hunt for it.

2. To see if a book has been read/unread. (After 1,000 books the titles aren't enough to remember if I have, ot havent)

3. I was wondering if it was possible to change the Header Title font too? The standard font is easily changed, but is annoying to have the book name and chapter number take a whole page. (Especially if I'm trying to read something I don't want others to see ;-P)

4. I understand that bulk uploading has been requested numerous times and is not functional (yet), but is there some way we could dump all our books into the Ipod storage area/stanza folder and have the programme read it from there? Having to reload 1,000+ books back in after an IPOD crash/reload is really depressing. And Calibre can be a fickle mistress.

Number 4. is already

Number 4. is already available by being able to bulk upload epub files to a specific location on the iPhone/iTouch - read the FAQ for the details.

The whole

The whole open-each-individual-book-to-transfer option is a pain. Why can't the Stanza Desktop application have an iTunes-style library browser? I'd like to add books, create collections, add cover art, edit descriptions, and more.

Online Pharmacy

You could try using Calibre

You could try using Calibre instead of Stanza desktop? It has much richer functionality.

As well as all the ebook management and conversion it also has a built-in web server that supports Stanza style catalogs so you can easily browse and bulk download to the iPhone.

A few more features and STANZA will be perfect.

Hello!

First of all, I would like to congradulate you upon the development of such a good iPod app. I noticed a few drawbacks of your application and thought I could suggeest you a few things, so here goes:

• The 'TEXT DETAIL' could have had a cut-copy-paste interface so that one can lookup meanings from a dictionary app.
• The inclusion of an inbuilt offline dictionary would also be greately appreciated.
• The cut-copy-paste in the 'ANNOTATION' part could have a definite use too.
• The concept of e-book sharing via Bluetooth and/or wifi is greately appealing and I would appriciate if you include this feature into your reader as well.
• The autoscroll and save-your-own-theme features would work out great.
• The inclusion of more fonts and font borders would enhance the visiblity on a few other backgrounds involving a lot of colors.
• The iPod to PC book transfer via Bluetooth and/or wifi or Google Docs would be amazing.
• The option of text editing while in the 'TEXT DETAIL' mode would make an excellent option in the reader

Long Delay While Loading Book

Stanza is a great application; thanks a lot!! I'm used to using eReader - been using it for years on my Palm PDA. But Stanza is clearly the way to go on the iPod Touch. I love that I only need one reader application for so many formats!

I just have one request - I'd like to see a more timely method of figuring out the number of pages.

For example, when loading the current book I'm reading there is a lengthy delay which locks up the program- I cannot turn pages while Stanza figures out how many pages there are, as I could with eReader.

Can the page count happen behind the scenes, please? I'd much rather be able to start reading right away and know in a couple of minutes what page I'm on or how many there are to go.

Thanks again! - Dave

PS: The book I'm referring to has 2288 pages but all my "large" books have this delay before I can turn a page. This situation occurs each and every time I open the book; whether Stanza already has it loaded when I open the program or not. I hope this additional info helps. Thanks again!

PPS: Further investigation reveals that this seems to occur when the entire book loads; when the PDB book loads in it's entirety rather than being broken up into chapters or small sections. Some of my ebooks seem pretty well behaved when loading. I wonder what causes this and what, if anything, can be done about it.

Hmmm... the plot thickens, if you'll pardon the expression.

Number of pages

First let me thank you on my knees for this awfull app!
The only thing which I miss (from a book of paper) is its number of pages. I can't know how thick is the book before picking it.
Actually it's just an idea to make Stanza better than perfect!

When you tap the centre of

When you tap the centre of the screen it tells you how far you are through the book.

There is also the (very thin) progress bar at the bottom of the screen.

I know how helpfull it is,

I know how helpfull it is, but i would like the NUMBER of pages. If I may.

Lock out screen rotation

I know Stanza/iPhone already has a setting to "freeze" the screen rotation. But it apparently adopts (and freezes) whatever rotation it finds when the app is launched.

I would like to be able to lock it to my choice of rotation and have it ALWAYS use it, regardless of the physical orientation of the iPhone.
