iPhone Feature Requests

Thanks so much for creating the iPhone edition of this software. It has become my favorite document reader. I do have two feature requests for future iterations of the iPhone software.

1: I'd like a preference to allow for returning to the last open document and page upon launch of Stanza. Currently the requirement of tapping through the lists to get to the currently open document is cumbersome, particularly when you have to use the iPhone "Settings" App for every little preference change. I'd like to open Stanza and have my current book open to my last page read as an option.

2: I'd like the the option to change the page reverse and advance screen taps to include top of page and bottom of page taps. If I'm holding the iPhone in one hand, particularly the left hand, it is easier to flip pages forward and back by tapping at the top or bottom of the screen rather than by reaching across the screen to do the right hand tap on the screen.

I would also like to add my voice requesting the option of an autoscroll as well. (I've voted in the Poll.)

Thanks again for the awesome document reader and I appreciate having the forum to search for and request help.\

Cheers

Jon

Overall look and feel ideas

It would be neat if you could replicate as close as possible the look and feel of a real book, and yet add in technological touches as well that could really personalize the experience and make ebooks worth something more than just letters on a screen. Here are some ideas that would be really cool:

- Location awareness: This is probably the biggest of all the ideas I had - make Stanza location aware so that it could do neat tricks such as the following: if you're in a coffee shop, a faint coffee stain would display in the background; if you're at an airport a faint passport stamp would display; if you're at home a jelly stain or something, etc etc. Stanza would also store these pieces of information with the book, which would be transferable back to your Stanza desktop app - metadata like all of the GPS locations where you read the book, time spent on certain pages, how many times you've read the book, when and where you first read the book, what headlines were happening in the world at that time (pulled from a news website), when you last read the book, etc, etc; and then present that metadata with some eye-candy. I found a receipt in a book I was reading once that brought back all kinds of memories of what I was doing at the time I last read the book, and this is kind of the point I'm getting at in personalizing the reading experience.

- Graphic touches: another thing we associate with physical books is the texture of books. In Stanza, you could replicate this by making pages look more lifelike with a subtle texture, give random pages a slight wrinkle here and there, and possibly even track where we touched the page, so that if we flip back a couple of pages we see a slight fingerprint (stored with the book so that next time we read it we see these things again). When we go to close an ebook, a bookmark would appear in the page before the app closed (you could even let users create their own bookmarks and share them via the app for download).

I know these are kind of bold ambitions, but I think they would make the ebook reading experience pretty incredible.

Background and text colors should apply throughout

You've done a wonderful job of implementing text and background page coloring. It'd be even nicer if those would apply to all screens in the program!

In the middle of the night, I enjoy reading with yellow text on a black background, but if I return to the library or settings pages in the program, I'm back to the bright white screen with black text which ruins my night adaptation and wakes me up!

By the way, the program itself is simply brilliant! I especially like the downloading/searching abilities--and being able to tap the left side to advance a page (that way I can read one handed).

Downloading ebooks

I love Stanza, but it has one minor flaw in my opinion.

I'd like to be able to download .txt ebooks over the internet from the iPhone. Add that, and Stanza will be THE greatest app ever!

Tilt to page or scroll

First, bravo on a very fine app indeed.

I wanted to add another voice to the tilt to scroll (or a less complex tilt to turn the page) option. It would allow one to read without needing to touch the screen at all. Some kind of adjustment option (big tilt to slight tilt) would be nice. And, of course the ability to turn tilt off.

Thanks for your consideration!

View Metadata from Library level

I would like to be able to view the metadata associated with a book on my iPhone from the Stanza library level screens. At the moment you can only view this metadata if you have opened the book for reading.

This would have helped me with a recent scenario where I was trying to read a set of books from a series. I had quite a lot of books loaded onto the iPhone and could not remember which book was next in the series. The information about the Series and Series Number was in the book metadata so a faster way of viewing it than opening each book for reading and then selecting the metadata option from there would have been extremely useful.

Tags

I would very much like it if you could add user created tags that I could attached to ebooks. This would be similar to what GMail does or even MobiPocket Reader on Palm.

I could attach 1 or more tags to an ebook and then view all the books with that tag.

I could create tags for books I've already read, tags for all the books in a series, tags for books I want to read next, tags for books I liked/disliked, etc...

That would be wonderful addition to Stanza

Emily's picture

You can actually do something

You can actually do something like this already.

On the main Library screen, hit the plus-sign at the bottom to create a "collection". After you enter the name and save it, tap on the collection you created, which will appear at the bottom of the main Library screen. Then tap the plus-sign again to add books to that collection.

Date last read

It would be nice if Stanza would keep track of when I last read a book (I often read books I really like more than once).

I'm not sure if this should just be a record date button, or if it should be when I read past the last page.

I do not want to dirty up the last date just because I accidentally opened the book, or decided to read the first few pages as a way to decide if I want to read the book. I just want to record the date last read when I've really read the entire book.

Maybe a 2nd date that indicates when I last read a few pages. Or maybe after I crossed a chapter boundary. Maybe a chapter boundary date could include the chapter number, or page. This would tend to filter out accidental openings, and reading a few pages to see if I wanted to read this book now.

I would find these dates very useful.

Add comments about a book in the Library listing

I would like 2 things.

First I would like to attach a short comment that gets displayed in the Library listing. Sort of a quick note to my self about how I liked the book in case I want to reread it, or maybe a note about reading this before reading the next book in the series, or the date I last read the book, or maybe just a note that see additional comments. Something short but displayed along with the title, author, and artwork.

Second, I would like to be able to attach a note to the book so I can add additional more detailed comments.

Better Formatting Seriously Needed!

I completely agree with Dexterian about Stanza needing better formatting, particularly at the front and back of each ebook. Currently the app doesn't recognize the prologue/introduction/preface/foreword/after word/epilogue, and it doesn't properly format the dedications or quotes which some books have in front, which made the front a bit messy.

Do you mean Stanza Desktop or Stanza iPhone? If Stanza iPhone, which sorts of books do you mean, e.g., books purchased through Fictionwise, books downloaded from Random House, free books from Feedbooks, or books you have uploaded yourself? Can you give us some examples of books whose formatting you would like to see improved? Thanks!

Email?

Emily, can I send someone there an example of an HTML book that does not translate well to Stanza? Books I have in HTML format typically look nowhere near as good in Stanza (they lose italics, bold, images, etc).

Password Protect Stanza?

I just put Stanza on my iPhone and I am enjoying it very much.
One feature that I wish was available for Stanza is the option to password protect it before launching the program.

Unlike my laptop, my phone seems to be a much more mobile (duh) where anyone could potentially just look at anything. Some of the content that I have on Stanza might be private or sensitive so I was hoping for having a password protection option in the future.

Hello

Please make it so that I can lock the font size.

Thank you for an awesome program.

Docs in Zip?

So I have found a website which has lots of books in zip format with doc format files in the zips.
I tried adding this as a site to stanza on the iphone but it does not see to work directly.

Is this a supported combination? I know zips are supported but is there a limitation to what the zip can contain?

Search and Search Again Feature

Thanks for he Stanza iphone application. It's great!

Within books I have on the iphone I need to search for words to find a specific paragraph within a book.
It would be great to have a search and search again feature that is efficient.

read aloud ?

Thank you very much for Stanza.
I am a newbie so forgive if need be. Is it possible to have Stanza read books aloud to me so I dont have to wait/pay for audio books? Or is there another way of doing that ?
Thanks

The user below is correct.

The user below is correct. In Mac OS X, Stanza Desktop can convert your book to an mp3 using Mac's built-in speech synthesis. You can then listen to the mp3 of your book on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

That sounds nice, but unfortunately i am pc bound for now(i think the pc has a wandering route to the same end). I was hoping someday to find an ebook reader that could just read a book aloud on command. I hoped that i had missed the manual conversion stage, but still that is a good option. Thanks again for a great product!

Footnotes and endnotes

It is essential that footnotes and endnotes are displayed exactly where they are inserted rather than "at the end of the page" or, God help us, "at the end of the book". So for example:

Contrails from when conditions are wet*(*A relative humidity over ice of 100% or more is required) and cold.

is exactly what is needed. Unlike physical books, we can't go flicking to the end of a page/book in order to read the note and then come back to our place.

Raveem.

Format feature request

Hi Stanza dev team,
I am just writing to request that the Adobe Digital Editions file type be supported by Stanza for the iPhone. I would happily pay a price of up to $30-40 for an iPhone app that supported these ebooks. The second request is a bit of a dream request, but if you integrated Questia.com subscriptions to stream into Stanza for the iPhone, properly formatting them, caching 2-3 pages ahead, you guys would be up for a Nobel for sure.

Thanks,
Nick

Some more navigation/loading fixes

Stanza is wonderful, but there are a few more small things that could be done to make it even better:

1) Font size. It's very hard to manipulate the font size button with any kind of accuracy (actually, I find it very hard to move the button at all). And for some reason, the font size resets itself now and then. Perhaps there could be a few pre-defined font sizes, in addition to the sliding button?

2) Screen rotation. Even though I have it set to the "locked" mode, the screen still sometimes changes on me, and is very hard to shift back.

3) Moving from chapter to chapter. Why does there have to be a spinning ball on the screen every time you switch chapters?

4) Subjects. When I leave Stanza and then return to it, the program defaults to showing the "recently viewed" books, rather than keeping me in the subject I was in before.

5) Returning to books. This seems to be a memory issue. Every time I return to a book, whether it's after reading a different book, or switching apps, I have to wait while Stanza loads the whole book. I know that eReader on Palm only had to load the book the first time you opened it, and I believe it's the same situation for eReader on the iPhone (if it's not, then it's a lot quicker).

Thanks!

PDF support

I really hope that PDF formatting support will be improved, because now is nearly impossible for a mac user to e.g. convert a pdf to lit to see the book properly.

Emily's picture

We do hope to improve our pdf

We do hope to improve our pdf conversion, but it is a fundamentally more complicated process than conversion from any other format because pdfs have a fixed page size. For more details, see here:

http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/pdf_issues

We do not currently export to Microsoft Lit, but we might eventually in a future version.

Download all and/or wireless syncing/backup of Stanza library

I have seen the request for a Stanza library in the desktop app, which would be an excellent addition to the app. However, it would be quite useless if it did not also include the option to synchronize and backup your Stanza library on the iPhone/iPod Touch. For example, if you are reading an eBook on your iPhone and are about halfway through the book, but then your iPhone quits working, you will have to search through the book to find the page you were on. This can be very difficult if you have changed the font size and can't remember exactly how big it was. If Stanza desktop were to have an option to make a backup of your Stanza library and then restore that library to the iPhone, it would prevent a lot of hassle.

Further, if Stanza desktop had a library that would allow all eBooks, or collections to be synchronized to the iPhone app, similar to the way iTunes works, it would also speed up the addition of new content. Wirelessly syncing could be made even simpler if the desktop app could trigger Internet Sharing over AirPort for users that don't connect their computer to a Wi-Fi network (or don't have a Wi-Fi network for their iPhone/iPod Touch to connect to).

Even without a library, it would be nice if the iPhone app had a "Download All" button to download all eBooks currently being shared by Stanza desktop. This would make it much easier to transfer large numbers of books to your device if you had to erase them for one reason or another.

Lastly, if a library were implemented in Stanza desktop, it would be very simple for the iPhone app to transfer eBooks downloaded from various other sites to the Stanza library on your desktop, ensuring that if an eBook site were to go under, you could maintain a copy of the eBook in a secure location in the event that your iPhone/iPod Touch were to stop working, too.

Thanks for the awesome app, and keep up the incredible work!

One more thing

Also, having a library that you could modify could allow you to fix issues with file titles/authors/etc. being misspelled or missing.

Emily's picture

Thanks for all your

Thanks for all your suggestions. They are all things we are considering for future versions of the two programs.

Have you downloaded the new version of Stanza Desktop (beta 15)? I think you'll be pleased to see that you can now adjust the title and author information. Open a book in Stanza Desktop, and then go to View->Book Info. Enter the information you would like to add or modify. Then save it as epub (or just save it, if it's already in epub format), and close the file. Open the epub you just saved in Stanza Desktop. You'll now see the new information you entered. This will get transferred when you share your book with your iPhone.

Bookmarks and pagination

Hi, I have a couple of small requests (much less important than fixing all the ereader-related bugs, but still...)

Both of these requests are basically about making Stanza work as simply as eReader does when it comes to navigation.

First, the bookmarks:
It's not easy to add a bookmark in Stanza, nor is there any way of knowing if you've reached a bookmark while you're reading. Ereader's corner-tapping is much better. Also, the bookmarks could be displayed in a separate screen from the chapter index.

Second, pagination:

It would be great to have the option of continuous pagination throughout the book, rather than chapter by chapter.

Emily's picture

Thanks for the suggestions. A

Thanks for the suggestions.

A number of people have requested eReader-style bookmarks, so we're looking into it.

About pagination: I think you mean that you'd like to know where you are in the whole book, rather than just in the chapter. That sounds reasonable to me, so I'll mention that to our engineers.

There are several ways to get

There are several ways to get books into Stanza on your iPhone. Sharing is the easiest way. I can't quite tell what you have tried so far, but I assume you mean that you haven't had success by enabling sharing with Stanza Desktop and that you've checked out all these faqs:

http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone
http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/troubleshooting_sharing
http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_sync_with_iphone_without_a_wireless_n...

Are your books in eReader format? If so, you can follow these instructions to get your books to your iPhone.

http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/getting_ereader_titles_on_the_iphone

Alternatively, if you are comfortable with ftp and friends, you can try this for books not in eReader format:

1. Open your books in Stanza Desktop, and do a Save As... to get them in epub format.
2. Upload these epub files to your personal website.
3. In Stanza on your iPhone, go to the Online Catalog, and then scroll down and tap Direct Downloads.
4. Enter the URL of the book you just uploaded that you want to download to our iPhone.

You can also create a webpage with links to all your books on your website, and create a new catalog by tapping the plus sign in the Online Catalog screen and entering the webpage URL. You'll see your new catalog in the Online Cataog, and you can open your new catalog and download books from there.

If you want to get really fancy, you create your own Lexcycle catalog. Go to http://www.lexcycle.com/developer for more info.

Ok i'll try it this

Seems like a reasonable idea. I'll let our developers know about it. Thanks!

I would like to be able to

I would like to be able to download books that I keep on my iDisk.

Emily's picture

I'm not very familiar with

I'm not very familiar with iDisk and MobileMe. Can you access a file on your iDisk by entering a specific URL in Safari on your iPhone? If you can provide a URL that goes directly to a ePub or eReader book on your iDisk, then you can add that URL as a Direct Download in the Online Catalog section of Stanza on the iPhone. If the URLs are hard to enter or remember, you can try this:

http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/linking_to_epub_files

If you can't access the books on your iDisk with a specific URL, then it probably won't be possible right now to download books directly from your iDisk into Stanza on your iPhone. Instead, you'll have to use your computer to transfer your files to your iPhone either by uploading to stanza.fictionwise.com (for eReader files) or by using Stanza Desktop (for all other files).

viewing original PDFs

The PDF to epub converter is mostly good enough but sometimes you want to see what the original PDF looked like at the point you were reading, and then return to the same point. Since the epub format is fixed, what would be good is if the Stanza Desktop could create a "correspondence file" when it creates the epub file from a .pdf, giving the correspondence of each page in the epub file to the original .pdf . Then, you would upload to the iPhone Stanza three files: the epub file, the original .pdf, and the correspondence file. In the iPhone Stanza, there'd be a button to switch to viewing the original pdf part corresponding to the current epub page, and then to switch back to the epub page once you have viewed the original pdf.

This would make Stanza usable for viewing scientific articles and in general any complex pdf.

Emily's picture

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. This would be useful not only for pdfs that have tables or complicated images but for any document that you might need to cite or refer to by page number. We are currently considering different ways to embed the original page numbers in our epub documents to clarify correspondence between what you're viewing in Stanza and the original paginated document.

It would be great if I could see in my list of books which books are read or unread. thx.

How To read Vietnamese language ebooks on Stanza

Can you please help me how to read vietnamese language ebooks STANZA .. THANK YOU!!

Emily's picture

You should be able to read

You should be able to read Vietnamese books on Stanza with no problems. Are you having difficulty viewing a particular book you want to read, or are you looking for sources for electronic books in Vietnamese?

Features Request

Having used Stanza for Public Domain books and eReader for purchased books ever since the apps were released I would like to request the following features, especially in view of the new arrangement with Fictionwise.

1. The option to load a complete book. I find that I don't get so immersed in a book when it's loaded chapter by chapter.

2. Bookmarks - I think they way they are implemented in eReader makes it so much easier to move around a book. Just tap the corner of the page and voila a bookmark.

3. Notes & Highlights - Once again eReader has implemented these very well.

4. Dictionary Lookup - I tried to download the Electronic Pocket Oxford English Dictionary from eReader but the download keeps failing.

I think Stanza is brilliant for reading ebooks and the above changes would, from my point of view anyway, make it perfect.

Many thanks for all your hard work and long may it continue.

Emily's picture

We're glad that you are

We're glad that you are enjoying Stanza!

Thank you for all of your suggestions. We will certainly add these to our list of potential new features for future versions of the software.

Fast way of jumping back to Library screen

I am using iPhone stanza.

I find that if I navigate down the "online Catalogs" screens, and at the end I download a book and select it for reading, then if I want to get back to the main Library screen I have to tap the centre of the screen to bring up the menu bars, and then hit the top left navigation button quite a few times to navigate backwards through the menu heirarchy before I get back to the main Library screen.

It would be nice to have a way to go directly back to the top level menu. I was thinking this would be an extra button on the menu bars displayed any time one taps the centre of the screen (in effect a Home button).

joelande's picture

Six requests

1. Integration with Baen free library
2. Display the image cover artwork as the first page/cover in full size
3. Create an iTunes-like library management system in the Desktop application
4. Support for mobi-pocket DRM
5. Dictionary (lookup) support
6. Tilt page turn - how about an option to tilt the phone to turn the page - that would require Zero-fingers! - Perhaps include a sensitivity control so that "normal" movements did not accidently turn the page

MobiPocket DRM support - If they let you

I too would like support for Secure MobiPocket (DRM) eBooks.

Resetting font size

First: I love Stanza. It is my favorite app on the iphone!

Someone else may have already raised this issue. Is so, I apologize in advance.

Once I find a font sizing that works best for me, it would be great to be able to set that to be the default size. Sometimes, having to reset it again and again for each book can be a be a bit of a drag. Imagine not having to go though that. Every time you downloaded and opened a new book, your settings would hold and you'd be immediately ready to start reading.

Love Stanza. It is really the

Love Stanza. It is really the most amazing and almost perfect apps for iPhone. A couple of features that i would like to have are:

It's a known problem with Stanza 1.6 that localizations aren't working. We will definitely have this fixed in the next version, which we hope will be released in a few weeks.

Vertical scrolling, please?

I understand that you are overwhelmed with requests of every kind. :-) But could we have an option for vertical page scrolling (like in Stanza desktop) in addition to the page-flip please ? I think this suits a lot better for some kinds of books, since flick scrolling brings us quicker up and down the pages of the book, and helps scanning and locating where we are in the book. I think this is especially good for informative/ non-fiction material e.g. reading the newspaper, bible and commentaries.

Open Location support for HTML and PDF

I hope this isn't covered elsewhere, but I'd love to be able to download HTML and PDF files straight into Stanza on the iPhone, instead of having to go via the desktop. I open transfer the printable versions of web articles, and also pdfs, in Stanza Desktop quite often, then transfer to iPhone via sharing. I'd like to cut out the middle man!

Some 1.6 impressions

Sorry, but I think 1.6 is worse than 1.5. For me.

Here are the main reasons:

1) There is no ability to change the primary online catalog to my own one. I understand that you're going to implement "book-store" feature (and, probably, through your own catalog), however I use to read in Russian and mostly own-created books, so this is real disappointment for me to add my catalog at the very bottom line there.

Can you at least allow us to add custom catalogs (with labels, eh?) to the top of the list?

2) Images inside epubs are not fit to iPhone display anymore. In case the image is large enough, the rest of it is displayed "outside the device display" :). So for books with a lot of images (e.g. technical documentation) we have to tap every image to examine it.

Can smdy give me a sort of idea what is the reason for such a change?

P.S. Reverted to 1.5 =(

marc's picture

1. We may re-order the

1. We may re-order the display of the catalogs down the road, but is it really too much effort to scroll down to access your custom catalog?
2. We're not aware of that problem. As a matter of fact, we recently fixed a bug where images that were too large should now be scaled down to fit in the iPhone's display. Do you have styles enabled in the preferences? If so, does changing that preference change the way the book is displayed?

It's just the question of style + Images displaing further info

1. You're right - this is really not a big issue, however my request is somewhat different than just "convenience in using Stanza app and usability improvements". Stanza has always been the most customizable e-reading app for the iPhone. I think that is one of the top reasons for its growing popularity. For me, personally, Stanza personalization lies in custom online catalogs support and the ability to change the primary catalog to a third-party one. I'm maintaining my own one (thanks to the info-for-starters from the Lexcycle Developer Central) and would really like to have it on the top =) It's just the question of style, every user wants to have not just Stanza iPhone, but his/her own Stanza, customized and personalized.

(Or, can you let me know for my own private ear how do I change the primary catalog URL in 1.6? =))) I'm asking cause not managed to find this info in any of the .plists inside the Stanza app folder on iPhone...)

2. I just did a little testing to answer your questions, here are the results:
- Stanza 1.5 scales all images to fit the display correctly, no matter if the styles are enabled or not;
- Stanza 1.6 does a sort of image scaling with the styles disabled, however images are still not fit to the display. No scaling at all with enabled styles.

P.S. I can provide further info (screenshots, epubs I tested this with, etc.) if it can help to sort it out. Thanks.

That's really good news! Glad that managed to be helpful and looking forward to that future release.

For images

I am working on illustrated books on epub, and this problem of images is very important !
I have two different cases :
- cover image is not in the whole page any more, too small
- images in text are too big, they are cut
Is this something I can change in my epub file to correct this ?
I do a lot of demos and it's very bad for me...
Thanks,

PS : can I go back to last version ? I don't see any option like that in settings...

Dictionary Support

It would be nice to be able to look up the definition of words from within books. I have the WeDict app installed on my iPhone, but I have to quit stanza and launch a seperate app to lookup the word.

Having a dictionary is most

Having a dictionary is most important to me and many others. After all these are
Ebooks and this is the digital age.

+1

Would be very happy to have this feature too. Possibly, Stardict dictionaries support?

Custom Catalogs before Built-in ones

At the moment on Stanza iPhone if you select the Online Catalogs, then the built-in catalogs are shown at the top, and custom catalogs underneath. As the list of built-in catalogs has got longer, this results in the custom ones being pushed off the first page. I would prefer it if the custom catalogs were first (as they are the one I access the most), with the pre-supplied ones listed underneath.

What do others think?

marc's picture

We may re-order the display

We may re-order the display of the catalogs down the road, but is it really so much effort to need to scroll down to access your custom catalog?

I can live with the current

I can live with the current order if I have to, but I find myself scrolling to the bottom of the list to my private collection often enough for it to be worth raising the issue. I can only see it getting worse as the number of built-in catalogs increases.

I thought that putting the private catalogs at the top would be a relatively easy change to make and one most people might find beneficial. I particularily notice it because I have been working on adding my own structured catalog facility for my private books.

Raising it here at least might get feedback as to whether I am the only one with a desire for this change, or whether it is a more general desire amongst Stanza users. Sounds like the sort of request that might be worth making into a Poll ?

It is always possible that you have some development in mind that would satisfy my need in a different way - if so that would be fine.

I guess

I guess the results of such a poll would be smth like 30% for "Custom catalogs at the top" and 70% for "Doesn't matter for me at all". So imho it is a good idea just to allow dragging custom catalogs to the top and back to the bottom, just like the order of custom catalogs is arranged in the current version.

+1

Many of us would really appreciate this.

Secure connections to Catalogs

I am currently downloading books to Stanza on my iPhone via a catalog on a web server I run on my home network. I want to make my catalog ebooks available via the public internet so I can connect to it using Stanza on my iPhone while I am away from home. To avoid making my library of books available all to all and sundry (which would break all sorts of copyright rules) I would like to make the connection back to my home server have some level of security.

The easiest way is to set it up for a username/password prompt, and I would like to be able to configure this as part of the properties for using a particular catalog. A more secure method would be ssh or vpn based, but that may be asking for too much.

If there is a way of achieving this already please let me know what it is!

Stanza does support basic

Stanza does support basic HTTP authentication, which will present the user with a prompt to enter their username and password to access the catalog. For information on setting up authentication in Apache, see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/howto/auth.html.

Removing saved username/password

I have now set up my web server to user username/password authentication on the catalog defining my private book collection, and it is working fine for me. It is doing just what I want for accessing my own private catalog hosted on my local web server.

While using it, however, one small point has occurred to me. If when you are prompted you set the option to remember the username/password setting, then it subsequently goes in without prompting you again (which is nice) as long as theat username/password is still valid on the server. However what if one wanted to use a different username/password combination (or even see what one was being used). I could envisage a scenario where one had logged in to a site under one username/password combination, and wanted to switch to another account. This appears to not be something that can currently be done or have I missed something? Perhaps simply having an option to enable being prompted again is a good idea.

Not at all critical to me, but something you might want to think about?

I will try that!

I will try that then.

I had not realised that facility was there. As I am using Apache as for personal web server your link was ideal, and it should be easy enough to set up.

Thanks and a request

Thanks so much for what you have done... A killer set of apps!

The one thing that I miss the most is a built-in dictionary to look up words.

I would love to have something exactly like the system wide look up in OS X.

Keep up the great work!

I just whant to sync up an ebook!

Ok so, I've installed Stanza Desktop and the app is on my iphone but theres nothing intuitive about this otherwise i would have been reading ebooks by now... I've got a load of PDFs on my desktop and I want to transfer them onto my iphone like you would with music and picture?... but all i get when i launch Stanza Desktop is a blank white page, I can open a pdf with messed up formating that just looks like a normal text file....doesn't appear to be any option to just sync it to stanza app on my phone? How do i do this?

Thank you,

J.K.

Transferring books from your

Transferring books from your computer to your iPhone is actually very simple. Try this:

http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_get_books_onto_stanza_iphone

When you open your PDF in Stanza Desktop, it will not look exactly as it does in Acrobat Reader or Preview. If it is actually unreadable in Stanza, though, this should make it look better:

1. Open the PDF in Preview (on Mac) or Acrobat Reader (on Windows).
2. Select and copy all the text.
3. Launch Stanza Desktop, and select New From Clipboard from the File menu.
4. Share that new file with your iPhone, as described in the link, above.

Whenever you have questions, it's always a good idea to search the FAQs or in the forum. Happy reading!

Download Progress

At the moment when you download a book from a catalog you just get the "busy" indicator. I think it would be a good idea if there was a more detailed indication of progress. Perhaps displaying the amount downloaded and the total size (e.g. "120K/500K").

A similar progress indicator might apply to downloading a catalog?

The lack of a progress indicator is aggravated by a tendency for Stanza to exit back to the iPhone desktop if there are problems with the download (although this is probably a bug I would guess).

I use Stanza to catch up on

I use Stanza to catch up on reading newsletters and other text I save off the web, .rtf or .txt formats, no eBooks at all.

I would like to be able to edit the text within Stanza as I read and to transfer the edited file back to the computer, just to correct display errors in the text or strip out useless info in the body of the text or add my own notes. Highlighting, adding bold type or coloured type would be an extra bonus.

I love Stanza, have iPod touch for just two weeks now, have Stanza working for one week, v happy.

Search catalogue by language?

Any chance of sub-dividing the online catalogue by language? I think most people are only interested in books in one language (in my case, English), and it is a little annoying to have to wade through lots of Feedbooks titles in French, especially in the Recently Added section. Or is this something I should take up with Feedbooks?

Most of the catalogs,

Most of the catalogs, including the Feedbooks one, have a top-level sub-catalog called "Books by Language" that you can use for this.

Complete Backup on the iPhone

Once you have a lot of ebooks transfered to your iPhone, any problem that requires a full recover (that doesn't allow you to use a backup for that recovery) makes all that effort useless. I've seen a few applications on the iTunes App Store that use SyncDocs that might be a good way to make backups:

http://syncdocs.sourceforge.net/

Their FAQ lists the apps that currently use it. I've tried it with XpenseTracker and it seems pretty fast.

download books from lib.ru directly

If one could just download from the biggest russian free online library directly - lib.ru, it would be awesome

Stanza causes Highlighting problem on Acrobat

After Stanza desktop open an Acrobat PDF file with embedded highlighting, it will cause the file to display irregular highlights once the file is re-open with Acrobat.

Wondering if any else experiences the same problem...

More search features, please...

I'd really like to have improved search features. I often have need to search very large texts and just the ability to jump back and forth between searched terms would be very helpful for me. I saw that this has already been requested, but I thought I'd put in my vote. Thanks for the great software!
