Stanza Desktop beta 18 released

We are happy to announce the release Stanza Desktop 1.0 beta 18! You can download it for Windows and Macintosh from http://www.lexcycle.com/download.

This release contains numerous bug fixes, including improvement in compatibility for Snow Leopard (specifically, it fixes a problem with dragging files onto the dock icon that have spaces in them).

We hope you enjoy this new release! As always, please report problems, issues, and questions via the forums at http://www.lexcycle.com/forum/stanza.

OK. This beta 18 does not

OK. This beta 18 does not work if you have 64 bit Java 1.6 set to be the default VM for applications. Moreover, it ships with an old JavaApplicationStub file. Looks like the developers do not test it on 64bt java. Here what to do:

1. Fix the stub file: copy /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/MacOS/JavaApplicationStub into

Stanza.app/Contents/MacOS

You might need to change permissions on that directory (Get Info > Permissions)

2. fix the Info.plist

change the value for JVMArchs to i386 (it is set to x32, which is ASAIK is a wrong value to use anyway)

Beta 18 doesn't seem to work on Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I just downloaded the latest version of Stanza for the desktop and when I start the app I get a box that has the following info:
Title: Unsupported Operating System
Content: Stanza does not support the 64-bit Mac OS operating system.

In the console I get the following:

Desktop 1.0b18 on Mac 10.6.1 Catalog Error

Since upgrading to b18 from b17 on Mac OS X 10.6.1 I'm getting a "Catalog Error - timed out" whenever I try to transfer books from Mac to iPod touch (iPhone OS 3.1.1 using Stanza 1.9.1). Beta 17 was fine doing this and I've changed no settings between b17 and b18. I've checked Tools>Enable Sharing and Tools>Allow Anonymous Sharing are both on and the firewall has Stanza allowed to accept incoming connection requests. I tried toggling the firewall setting for Stanza to off and then on again but it makes no difference. I've relaunched Stanza, no difference.

Shutting down the Mac's firewall altogether fixes it, so that's where the problem is. But as soon as I restart the firewall it goes back to not working. Stanza is definitely set to allow incoming connections in firewall preferences panel, so it should work (and it did in b17). Something in Stanza's firewall interaction seems to have changed with b18.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be?

Same here

Same issue here. I had to disable the firewall completely to list the catalog on my mac.
It saw the imac m but hung getting the list of books.

Why is this so buggy?

In beta 17 I had the same problem: basically any sample pdfs that I download from amazon.com cannot be read by Stanza.

See, for example, the download links at http://www.amazon.com/Getting-50-Working-Couples-Sharing/dp/0553806556 under "100% Content."

Dragging these pdfs to the Stanza window or choosing Open>File result in their being displayed as pdfs without the necessary reformatting by Stanza. If I "massage" it a bit in Acrobat by running "optimize" or Apple's Preview by saving it again," Stanza will import them and reformat, but there's weird text at the bottom of every page. Copying the entire pdf (via command-C) produces even worse results.

These are QuarkExpress 7 files encoded using Acrobat Distiller 6 for Macintosh.

This is all the more troubling because Lexcycle now belongs to ... amazon.com!

I'm wondering whether the Stanza desktop software for Windows works better :(
