Stanza Desktop beta 17 released

We are happy to announce the release Stanza Desktop 1.0 beta 17! You can download it for Windows and Macintosh from http://www.lexcycle.com/download.

This release contains numerous bug fixes, including improvement in compatibility for systems that have Safari 4 installed (notably, the elimination of the system beep that occurred when changing pages).

We hope you enjoy this new release! As always, please report problems, issues, and questions via the forums at http://www.lexcycle.com/forum/stanza.

Formatting when converting

Hi

Do you have an ETA of when you might include formatting like italics, bold etc in the Stanza desktop when converting from formats other than ePub?
I'm converting a lot of my .lit files and apart from a few giltches it's pretty smooth but it'd be great if it would also recognize some of these basic formatting items as well.

thanks

Rob

We don't have any timeframe

We don't have any timeframe for when we will support formatting and styles in our conversion from other formats, but in the meantime, you might want to look at Calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net), which does attempt to preserve formatting when translating between formats. Additionally, it integrates with Stanza's sharing feature.

Error when trying to share from Desktop to iPod Touch

With this new version b17, when I go to look at Shared Books on my computer, it says "Loading..." for a while, then gives me an error: "Catalog Error. timed out" with an OK button. Sharing worked great in beta 15. Any ideas to get it fixed?

I would second the request for a bulk import ability from Stanza Desktop eventually. I'm absolutely loving the program in general, though! Keep up the great work. :-)

UPDATE: Fixed after I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and in fact I now see the "Download All" button exactly where I wanted it. Yay! Hopefully that's a new addition rather than me just overlooking it before. ;-) The bad news is I'm now getting the error I saw someone else mention here recently about not opening files when I drag them onto the Dock icon ("Could not open the file [path to file]. File does not exist"). I notice the last part of the name in the path specified seems somewhat mangled (wish I could copy/paste it here!). The path has html markings for spaces and special characters (%20, etc.). Hope that helps! (I'm on a Mac, BTW, in case it wasn't obvious with the Snow Leopard reference)

The Snow Leopard issue is a known problem, and we hope to get it fixed soon.

Desktop Stanza multiple file/book support

Hi Stanza.. LOVE your app - have been scouring the internet for something to read my vast collection of ebooks on my iphone - desktop stanza is the answer/solution I've been desperately looking for!

However I would very much appreciate consideration of an added function for a bulk upload tool to move directories of files to my iphone at one time, rather than the current file-by-file transfer system.

Keep up the good work - have a PRO version which people can pay for that supports the PC/MAC file upload - am sure people would be more than willing to pay a reasonable fee for the privilege.

There is already a bulk

There is already a bulk upload capability (see the FAQ for details) if you have the books in the ePub format that by-passes Stanza desktop.

If you are looking for bulk conversion facilities to ePub then it is worth looking at Calibre.

The Win PC app sucks a bag of monkey caulks

Yeah the PC app is a terrible mess. It won't open most of my PDF books properly, some show as gobbledygook and some show up frozen on the first page. Keystrokes are screwed i.e. Ctrl-O brings up what is supposed to be Ctrl-L to open a link. You can't drag and drop files/books onto the window and have it open them. You can't mass open files. The iPhone app is fantastic but the PC app blowzzzzzzzz.

"Options" on PC 1.7 is broken

fyi, the menu item "Options" on PC version 1.7 is broken.

When selected, it presents the "bookmarks" table.

You're kidding, right?

Why is there no image support? Why don't links work? Why is the formatting so limited?

Come on, the joke's over. Where is the real beta?

Working fine here! Thanks

Working fine here! Thanks for the release.

Project Gutenberg "java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException"

Hello! I've just downloaded beta 17, and was trying to open .mobi files I've downloaded from PG. The half-dozen I've tried so far have all said "Could not load book: java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException", with all different numbers.

I can't tell you which files to look at, because I downloaded them ages ago, and they're named clever things like "pg1212.mobi". In fact, I was hoping to use Stanza to find out what they are and then rename the files to something meaningful.

I couldn't find any other reports in the forum about this... am I the only one with this problem?

I believe that that error

I believe that that error normally means you do not have the latest version of Java installed.

Out of Bounds error

I am also getting the same error message with a download of the Kindle users guide from Amazon (this is the only file I have tried so far). I have the latest version of Java installed. This is on a Mac with the latest version of Stanza.
