The dedicated Stanza iPhone application, which can be downloaded onto the iPhone via the Apple App Store, can synchronized with the Stanza Desktop. The Stanza Desktop application is currently available for Apple Macintosh and Windows computers from http://download.lexcycle.com.
When you launch Stanza Desktop, open one or more books that are in any of Stanza's supported formats. You then need to enable sharing by selecting the "Tools" menu, and ensuring that the "Enable Sharing" menu item is checked. Once you have done that, ensure that your iPhone is connected to the same wireless network that your PC is on, and then launch Stanza iPhone. From the top-level library menu, select "Shared Books". You should see your computer name in the menu that appears, which you should then click on. Stanza Desktop will then notify you that your iPhone is attempting to connect to your shared library, and request your permission to allow the connection. Once you have granted permission, Stanza iPhone will display a list of books, one for each window currently open in Stanza Desktop. Clicking on the book with then download it onto your iPhone and import it into your library for later reading.
If you run into problems with sharing, please refer to http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/troubleshooting_sharing for common solutions to issues that users may encounter.

I Love this Software!
A Couple of MacBook Pro's and several other Macs, along with two Kindles, two iPhones and an iPod Touch. Worked right off the bat! I'm not crazy about reading books on a computer display (though the Mrs and I are crazy about our Kindles). The ability to move un-copyrighted works that have been gathering cyberdust on my hard drives to my Kindle and/or the iThingies is fantastic! Additionally, my wife is a writer and she can put a draft on my Kindle and/or iThingie for me to read in idle moments away from home.

I cant get my books from PC to my ipod touch
i am getting the similar problem, an I am getting infinate "Searching for shared books" on my screen. Also, when I open Stanza on my PC, i'm getting this error:
An Error occoured when trying to acces Bonjour services. Please report this problem to support@lexcycle.com.com.apple.dnssd.AppleDNSSDException: DNS-SD Error -65537:Unknown
This is so frusterating! can you help?
Nice work! Windows XP to an iTouch
Worked right off the bat. I concur with the comments below in it would be nice to see the list of files from a "Server" default directory. So when looking at the "Shared Books", the Stanza (Windows) server would dish up a "Default Directory" list of files.
I may be able to help if I knew what language you wrote the windows components in.
Thanks for the excellent app... Saved me the trouble of writing it myself :)
About this One-book-one-window thing
I tried to upload my books to my ipod touch, and I have to stop to write some thing here before I upload all of my books.
Here're couple NONE user-friendly experiences:
1. To upload or share a book from my pc to ipod touch, I need open the books one by one. If I close it, the ipod touch won't be able to find it in shared library. Can you also add a way to add a folder instead of adding one single file?
2. Some of my books are in plain text format. When I open it in stanza desktop, it took like 20 seconds and even my laptop doesn't response. It looks like stanza not only read it but also parse it already. But I remember stanza can actually read plain text, right? Then what's the point of this conversion?
3. All my books in plain text format are generated as "unknown", so I have to rename one by one in my ipod touch. Are there anything I could do on this?
Thanks.

Stanza with WindowsXP
One of my biggest concerns about switching from my Treo to an IPhone was being able to read ebooks as easily as on my Treo. I have to say that using the instructions, it was effortless and Stanza works beautifully. I can't believe it is not only free, but the best app for this as well. Very happy with it and had no problems.
Programm doesn´t recognize chapters (divisions) right
so it takes 1 or 2 MINUTES!!!! opening an ebook, is not usefull... We need an ebbok reeder being able to open an ebook in few seconds...i tried to write "chapter" in te divisions and it doesnt work.
Does not recognize my desktop
I followed the procedure completely.
However, after opening the book (.doc) on the desktop, went to iTouch, opened Stanza and it DOES NOT recognize my PC.
My PC is wire connected to the wireless router. The iTouch obviously has a wireless connection.
Is this a supported environment ?
Thanks, Carlos
Can't get it to work
Played around with the settings quite a while, firewall, sharing settings, etc. Eventually it was able to transfer, but some more specific instructions would be nice. Not everyone has the same settings the FAQ assumes they have.
Timing out. Awesome app. desktop version needs some work
hey i keep timing out. any recomendations to quicken download times? already dropped all of my firewalls, both third-party and Windows version. (running 32-bit Windows Vista, got Bonjour downloaded and also have Threatfire and PC-cillin installed as firewalls and as virus and adware scanners) if either of my programs have had past problems with Stanza I would gladly uninstall each of them.
any imput appreciated
thanks for the great program LexCycle
Timing Out
Sounds more like a router problem. Try cycleing your router and reconnecting. What wireless security are you using? Try dropping that (temporarily!) and see if that is the issue. Same set up here using WPA and work 1st try
Good luck
Stanza Desktop Windows Beta problems
It doesn't actually acknowledge that i have bonjour installed on my computer. Bonjour comes with the phone, so i already had it, Stanza insisted on reinstalling it.
and every time i try to enable sharing, it tells me to go to the apple site to install bonjour, despite the fact that stanza itself installed bonjour. if i say "yes take me to the apple site" stanza then sends me there and says 'seeya get back to us once you've installed' if i say no, i have to reselect enable sharing. so the menu option is ticked but nobody is home, my firewall is allowing stanza to behave as a server, but my phone can't find it....
i use bonjour successfully with other apps.... why bother putting out beta software that can't do the basic option it was designed for - getting books onto my iphone!!? i feel this is a con, you're all about your overpiced $15 to get me to buy the finished version which may or may not work.
Download OK, but only four pages are visible
I transferred a long PDF but both the desktop and the iPhone Stanzas were only able to see the first four pages of the document. Any ideas on how to fix? I desperately need a reliable PDF reader that won't choke on large documents.
you can download airsharing
you can download airsharing which works great for pdfs. I downloaded the app when it was free but now its 7 dollars. I have a pdf file thats 34 pages on a chapter for school and so far I haven't had any real problems with it.
Does PC have to be on the network wirelessly, or just on period?
Hi,
This isn't working for me on Windows XP. Is it really necessary for the PC to be connected WIRELESSLY to the network (as the instructions imply), or can it be connected with a wire to the same network that the iPhone is connecting to wirelessly? If the PC has to be connected wirelessly I'm out of luck on my desktop.
PC Connection
No... PC can be wired in. Make sure it is shared on the network (sharing is enabled and firewalls are not stopping all traffic). Also check your Anti-Virus. Newer versions can block traffic like a firewall.
Good luck

Great for a few books, but...
This method works fine between my Mac and my iPhone. But I have found a few issues ("change requests" for Stanza 2.0?):
This method requires a wireless connection. I only just got my very first wireless connection last week. Before that, I had to rely on USB connections. If I didn't have wireless, then I'd be in trouble. A drag 'n' drop method would be great... maybe some sort of iTunes interface?
The other issue is that I have hundreds of books that I want to download to my iPhone. I have all of Baen's free library and just as many paid books, not to mention a few others. First, I have to open each and every one on the Mac. This is tedious if I have a complex folder structure. If I don't have a complex folder structure, I have to wait for each one to open. Then I have to leave them open if I want to download any of them. I'm curious to see how many I can open before I run out of RAM. :-) (As I'm writing this, I managed to crash Stanza Desktop).
I use Stanza Desktop mostly as a conduit to download the books to my iPhone, rather than as a reader itself. Having some sort of library system would facilitate that conduit (a directory list, an XML file, something analogous to an iTunes playlist) . Then in the Stanza iPhone, having a "download all" option would be great. I also think that having a wired connection might also make this easier. So I can plug in my iPhone at the end of the day since the battery is already low, open up a library in Stanza Desktop, open up Stanza iPhone and select that opened library, download all, and go to bed. :-)
I hate to sound like I'm complaining. Really, this is a great little application. I just got the iPhone, and I was wondering how I was going to read all of my old Mobi books. It's nice to know that I can! I'm looking forward to the continuing development of Stanza.
NEED WINDOWS ASAP !!!!
Seems like a wonderful program...the best reader so far. But YOU GOTTA get Windows support for the desktop!!!! Shutting out about half your market is a tough way to go. We'll look forward to VERY early issue of Stanza Desktop for windows.
We do support Windows, as of
We do support Windows, as of a couple of weeks ago. See the announcement at http://www.lexcycle.com/forums/stanza/stanza_windows_release
my ebooks beautifully downloaded to iPhone 3G through Windows !
Just to thank you as I could successfully download my own books into the iPhone 3G through Stanza Desktop for Windows.
I installed Stanza desktop for Windows and Bonjour and followed the steps described in the "How do I get my books on my iPhone?" FAQ and worked beautifully.
Being able to read my own eBooks in the iPhone was a priority for me and you've done it, thanks!
This Worked for Me First Time
I have a 1G iPhone (2.0.10) and a Mac laptop (10.5.4).
Same here, at first. Then succeeded
I'm using an iPod Touch. At first I could touch the shared books but nothing happened, over and over. Then I exited and returned. It still took 2 touches per title, but they then immediately downloaded. Great app.
Unfortunately I have 2 ebooks that I purchased from a different web site (ebooks.com) that will not open because Lexcycle says they are locked. OS 10 says they are not locked, but I checked and eReader also cannot open them. They are in the same pdb format as the ones that successfully transfered over.
Me too: does not connect
Sharing Books does not work with iphone 3G and just installed Stanza on 10.5. Sometimes I can see my Mac (Books on Peter) but nothing more. Firewall is not active.
Stanza iphone useless?
I've had the same experience. From Stanza Desktop I exported the file (txt) as iPhone bookmarklet, but that means I read it in Safari, so why bother with iphone stanza? It doesn't open, doesn't do anything?
can't transfer books
I followed these instructions, and can click on "Shared Books" on my iPhone and see "Books on mycomputer". However, when I click on that, nothing happens; Stanza Desktop does not bring up a window and I can't get further.
Is this a firewall issue? I do not want to disable the firewalls on my computers. Can you tell me which ports I need to open for Stanza? An FAQ entry on how to adjust the firewalls would be great.
open Stanza's port in your firewall
Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall -> New -> Port Name: Other -> TCP Port Number: 9562 Description: Stanza
That opens Stanza's port in your Mac's built-in firewall so that Stanza on your iPhone can connect to desktop Stanza.
can't set port on 10.5.5
you can only set programs in the firewall settings.
In the sharing section there is no way to add a specific port.
my firewall is off and the portscan says that the port 9562 is open
but stanza does not find my client app on osx
Finding TCP Port
I can go as far as Apple Menu -> System Preferences -> Sharing and then there is no option for firewall. I'm using OS 10.5.4.
What am I doing wrong?
In OS 10.5.4 you can find the
In OS 10.5.4 you can find the firewall settings in System Preferences -> Security -> Firewall
This did the trick for me.
This did the trick for me. Many thanks!
Don't have a Mac
I have a Windows PC and I downloaded Stanza and Bonjour and followed all the instructions. When I select "shared books" from the top menu, the iPod Touch just says "searching for shared books" indefinately and never finds my shared books. Now what?
The exact same thing is
The exact same thing is happening for me. I tried to go back and export the file as an Apple iPhone one and open it through safari, but that option isn't there any more under file --> export as -->
what's should i do?
Strike that last... I
Strike that last...
I uninstalled Bonjour, and then re-installed it by finding it on the Apple website. When I re-opened Stanza everything went perfectly. Voila! I'm so excited for this!!
me too
it is non-responsive and just crashes when i try to access my files :(
Book Name
If you are getting books named "Unknown" when retrieving them this way, go to Stanza on your Mac, save the file to your desktop as a Plain Text file. Open this file with TextEdit, or whatever you prefer, and add the following lines to the top:
Title: [Book Title]
Author: [Book Author]
This will force Stanza to pick these keywords up as the Title and Author, which is what files are displayed as in the Stanza Shared Books screen. If you're having trouble connecting to your computer, make sure you don't have any firewalls turned on. Also, if you have a network like mine, you might have your computer plugged into a switch, and then a wireless router plugged into that. This seems to cause problems, try plugging your computer directly into the router, if possible, because that could be blocking the sharing traffic.
Unknown
Tried this and the Author is displayed correctly but not the title.
Re: Book name
Could it be compiled such that in the explicit absence of a title tag, it defaults to the filename? It looks ugly with all those unknowns in a big list and it's uneconomical when u consider the time aspect of renaming a large collection of random PDFs, docs etc that don't ahve such metadata. Please help.
Is this a feature?
Thanks for the tip. But as useful as this may be for pastes from the clipboard, what about PFD's and other proper book formats? Stanza is not only unable to recognize PDF titles, it messes up the layout (omitting any graphical content) and is virtually unusable as an "e-book reader" for the iPhone for PDF's at least. The iPhone's own built is support is useless for reading (excellent for presentations, e.g. large fonts), so I was hoping Stanza can help me port my PDF library to the iPhone.
Some PDFs don't seem to open in Stanza
I've had good success with importing some PDFs, but others appear as gibberish when I try and open them in Stanza. Why do some work and others don't?
