If you want to use Stanza Desktop to transfer books directly to Stanza iPhone, your iPhone/iPod Touch must be on the same wireless network as your desktop computer. If you do not have a wireless network that can be shared between your desktop/laptop and your iPhone/iPod, but you do have a wireless card on your desktop/laptop, you can still share books between the devices by using Internet Sharing.
On Macintosh
You can enable this by opening the System Preferences application, selecting "Sharing", then "Internet Sharing", and then "Airport". Once you have enabled internet sharing on your laptop/desktop, you can then go to your iPhone/iPod's preferences section, enable WiFi, find your computer in the list, and connect to it. Once you have connected, you should be able to share books as described here.
On Windows XP
Follow these directions here to set up an ad-hoc network, skipping step 1:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
When you create your new network, to make things easier, make the network "open" and encryption "disabled". (If you are comfortable connecting your iPhone or iPod Touch to a wifi network with encryption, then set the encryption settings the way you like.) Then connect to that network on your computer (from Network Connections) and on your iPhone/iPod Touch (from the WiFi screen in Settings). Try sharing again, and make sure Enable Sharing has a check mark next to it.
On Vista (courtesy of a helpful Stanza and Vista user!)
Go to the "Connect to a Network" screen, detach from your current network, choose "Set Up a connection or Network", and then choose "Set up a wireless adhoc (computer to computer) network". When the screen comes up, give your network a simple name and set the security protocol to "No Authentication (Open)". This will set up a wireless network. Connect your iPhone to that wifi network and try sharing.

We hope that in the near future Apple will allow dedicated programs to access these other means of connecting to desktop computers, but until that happens, being part of the same network is a requirement to transfer books from your computer to the iPhone.

Currently Stanza iPhone
Currently Stanza iPhone requires your iPhone or iPod Touch to be on the same wireless network as your desktop computer. This limitation is due to the inability of any iPhone application to access either the Bluetooth networking capabilities of the iPhone or the dock connector. We hope that in the near future Apple will allow dedicated programs to access these other means of connecting to desktop computers, but until that happens, being part of the same network is a requirement to transfer books from your computer to the iPhone.

Mac: w/o wifi connection
In Mac OS X 10.6.x, once you follow the instructions given above, you are asked to enter IP address, etc. Easiest way to set up the local network:
° Open the Airport menu in the menu bar
° Select "Create Network"
° Accept the default name (it's the name of your computer)
° Check "Require Password" and click "OK" if you want the password protection -- otherwise click "OK" and skip the next step
° Enter a 5-character password and verify; click "OK"
° Go to Settings on iPhone
° Click Wi-Fi -- it may take a few seconds for the iPhone to recognize your local wireless network but when it does, select that
° Enter a password if that's called for
° Go to Stanza:Library:Shared Books -- iPhone will search for a few seconds but should find any book in Stanza Desktop on your computer
Works mostly :)
Hello, first up thank you lexcycle for creating such a good iphone/ipod app in Stanza. Please keep up the good work.
I use a usb wifi G adaptor to connect to my ipod touch via an ad hoc wireless network, however I don't recommend it as its very slow for some reason and I get dropouts/timeouts even when the devices are 1 foot apart from each other. I think the ipod needs or is only designed to communicate with a proper access point.
To set up ad hoc networking in Windows XP I assign static ip addresses on both the pc and ipod touch as listed here (4th post) http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1220869
To download books onto my Ipod Touch in Stanza I follow this guide here: http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=391919#post391919
That guide on the mobileread forum uses the free application Calibre (http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/) to transfer books from your computer directly to your iphone/ipod. No uploading of ebooks or internet connection is required, only wifi. Hope this helps someone! :)
Most important FAQ should perhaps be first.
I have spent 5+ minutes looking for the instructions on how to get a book from Stanza Desktop to Stanza iPhone (and still haven't found it). I propose that you list how to do this as the first FAQ, preceding the list of workarounds, which could then be the second FAQ. Thank you (and I apologize for being an idiot and not being able to find it. Your site and service is excellent btw).

Doesn't work. The Mac asks whether you want to share your "airport" with computers using firewire and/or ethernet. I don't think the iTouch is either. I've tried both, neither works.
Do you have 10.4? Here's
Do you have 10.4? Here's Apple's instructions for doing this in 10.4:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh336.html
Note that I think that you might have to say that you want to share your built-in ethernet connection, even if you're not actually connected to the internet via ethernet.
Actually it does work with XP SP2
You must simultaneously join/connect at the iphone and the xp machine; they need to see each other at connect time I suppose. At the iphone, you need to repeatedly attempt to join until it takes hold.
Doesn't work with XP SP2
XP machine refuses to connect (to itself), and iphone refuses as well. There is something missing here that the microsoft page doesn't discuss.
I have done it on XP SP2
I have done it on XP SP2 several times, and it did require a little fiddling that the Microsoft help page doesn't mention. First, I had to move the new ad-hoc network to the top of the "Preferred Networks" list. Then I also had to disable the wifi connection and then re-enable it to get it to change to the new ad-hoc network. Once your computer is "connected" to the new network, the iPhone should be able to see it. If the computer isn't "connected", then the network doesn't exist, and the iPhone can't see it.
Desktop and iPhone and Hotel Wi-Fi
This addresses a problem I had when trying to share a book from Stanza Desktop to iPhone when using a hotel's wi-fi (so I have no control over the router) - I plugged into hotel's ethernet and then shared that. With iphone and macbook both connected to hotel wi-fi, the sharing/searching just timed out. It might be useful to add a suggestion that if you're using public wi-fi (such as wi-fi in a hotel room), then you might need to use ethernet and share instead of trying to share over the wi-fi.
Syncing without wireless network on Win XP
How can I do that on Win XP?
Transfer without wi-fi on windows pc
It seems that this (http://www.lexcycle.com/faq/how_to_sync_with_iphone_without_a_wireless_n...) describes how you can transfer without wi-fi on a mac, but how do you this on a Windows PC (XP)?
Thanks for the help!
